classic FriscoQuicksilver was one of the best Psychedelic bands of the 60s. this was their first album.
A Great Look to the Past
One of many albums that was either sold or "borrowed" as the years went by. I had this album on vinyl and saw the original band at the Fillmore East back in the 60's. Some triggered memory of guitarist John Cippolina prompted me to check Amazon and purchase it. As soon as the first notes rang out, a huge smile creased my face and took me back to the first time I heard it.
I was never much of a Dead fan, but Quicksilver really hit something in me. More than just an acid rock band, they touched many musical styles. The melody of Acapulco Gold & Silver rings today like it did back then and made me think that the Allman Brothers may have been influenced by this band more than a little in their early days.
Just a terrific album! Too short really, but every tune makes the most out of every minute. Lyrical, deep, energetic and not pretentious. Cippolina's trademark trebly vibrato playing is perfect, great vocals, and a tight easy rhythm section show a really great San Francisco band. Nothing but big smiles as the good old days came back .
One of the few recordings of John Cippollina
The rest of the musicians are OK, the vocals weak, but John Cippollina's talent was on an entirely different level and very little of his work was recorded. The reason I went to see Quicksilver back in the day was to see John Cippollina play, and that's the same reason I've had this studio album in every format it's been released on. The strongest lyrics here are on Hamilton Camp's old folk song "Pride Of Man," but the best QMS moments for me were always instrumental. Dino Valenti was in jail and did not appear on this recording which gets it an extra half star from me. There were better bands overall around back then but John Cippollina didn't play in any of them. This was a great band live so of course their label never bothered to put out a live recording. I still listen to it a couple times a year after 40yrs which can't be said of many other recordings of the period.
The 1st QMS
I had heard "Dino's Song" somewhere before, so I looked forward to having it (ca. I actually didn't have this album until I had bought the 4th QMS album "Just for Love". 1970). When I saw it and others on Amazon, I decided to buy all the CDs because I really like many of the QMS songs. I was always sorry that the group lost its glue and many key members left too soon. They could put together a wide range of sounds. This one has that wonderful Cippolina/Duncan interaction which originally defined the group. .
As advertised
The CD (with the songs in a different order) is better than the original album' mine had worn out. This album was among my favorites in the 60's. I would have preferred more information on the CD label, but the cuts were what I wanted, and got.
