This might not be the best Bonnie Raitt disc to start withhowever. . this was where I started with getting some much needed Bonnie in my collection. I enjoy a wide range of musical styles. My collection contains a large amount of blues and jazz, but I also have some great rock albums and some pop too. I even have some country in the form of Willie Nelson. While I hesitate to say that this is a great record, I find it very enjoyable, and it is a welcomed addition to my collection. It was pretty much what I was expecting, and while there weren't any big surprises here for me, it was definitely not a let down. I would have started with her earlier albums, but this was the only Bonnie album in the store that I was in besides her greatest hits. This is overall not as bluesy as some of her albums. I would say that it is more a bluesy pop music album. In any case there is no shortage of her slide guitar playing here. There are also some ballads on here that I found really good. This is a solid Bonnie Raitt album, and though I would have preferred starting with her early bluesy albums this one did not disappoint me.
Not my favorite
It's along the lines of Fundamental which is one of my least favorites. If you like Bonnie's Road Tested or Luck of the Draw, this is NOT the album for you. Hard to find a track to sing along with.
Bonnie Raitt's ew hit
She also showcased many of her other albums, which prompted me to buy this one. If a fan of blues and especially Bonnie Raitt, you may have seen her on "Breakfast with the Arts" this summer, performing from her new album. It explores some avenues of creativity and maturity in life and being a song writer. People will probably either like or dislike the changes in style. However, Bonnie Raitt is a performer and worth trying some of the audio samples if unsure whether you want to buy it or not.
Good, but I like the OLD Bonnie better!
Takes some getting used to!
. The styling on this CD was unlike any other Bonnie Raitt CD I've ever heard.
Good, excellent in places
Sure, it represents a departure from Bonnie's earlier music, but hey - after 35 years I think a new direction can be understood. "Souls Alike" is an interesting and usually fun CD. It's not like she pulled a total switch here - the amazing slide guitar work, bluesy rhythms and of course Bonnie's matchless vocals are all here. To me the biggest differences are the addition of Jon Cleary's brilliant, rollicking keys (Unnecessarily Mercenary and Love on One Condition) and the opening up of several songs into sparser, more groove oriented tracks (the opening track and the three softer ballads). This is a rather disjointed CD, and song to song it tends to throw a few curves, but that's just fine. I don't really like my music too predictable, and songs like "God. . . " and "Love. . . " are not predictable - not to mention "Crooked Crown", a dirty groove if ever there was such a thing. This is a solid CD, and really blends several basic styles - blues, straight ahead rock, Cajun swamp music and even a little funk. I really enjoy this CD.
