If ever a live album captured the real essence of a band.
The best album The Ramones ever put out. It's Alive pound for pound is one of the best live albums ever. For all of you that have been Punk Rock fans for years or new to this genre of music you should have this album. This catches The Ramones back in 1977 in London, England. What away to bring in 1978 but to see the band perform on 12-31-77. .

The Definitive Ramones Album
The Ramones would do their songs much more slowly in the studio because the studio metronomes had a limited speed. This album basically has all of their classics done the way that they're supposed to be done. I would have preferred if their live album was this exact show, but at CBGB, for symbolism, and for the album cover to be the classic cover of their self-titled album, but that's probably the dumbest thing to wish for.

This album is a live concert from the Ramones when they had just released their third album, and they do most of the tracks from their early albums, but in a much more energetic form, and again, much faster. For the Ramones, it works to do their music faster, and a comment that someone made about them is that it's not as easy as it seems to do only downstrokes at that speed, or to play a simple beat at that speed.

The tunes basically just use I-IV-V chord progressions, usually sneaking a forth chord somewhere, and they usually use power chords, and for all of you music theory freaks, a power chord is the root note with the fifth. They just use two note chords? Yes they do. Also, the line-up is basically a drummer (Tommy Ramone), a guitarist (Johnny Ramone), a bass player (Dee Dee Ramone), and a vocalist (Joey Ramone). The two note chords and the simple line-up really proves that less is more. . . at least in this way.

Because I've been giving guitar lessons, this is an album that I recommend for a guitarist to start out with when they're just beginning. However, keep in mind that they play fast, so it's not best to try playing at that speed.

The Best "Live" Album Ever.
But hey, find me ANY "live" album that isn't a bootleg that isn't. Yes, it's doctored. Everyone has doctored their live albums, it's exactly why bands like Metallica are total hypocritical money-scheming creeps :P Still, this is one of the most entertaining, action-packed albums ever printed. Get yourself a copy and enjoy the best band ever.

This is the real deal!
This is by far the best live collections of any of the bands of that era, It brought such a smile to my face and had my feet tapping throughout. As a man you is in his early 50's living in NJ with about a 45min ride to CBGBS I lived my early life going to the punk clubs weekly seeing them all from the Ramones to Blondie and my fav's Johnny Thunder's Heartbreakers. This is real punk from when punk was a word people made up as that is what they thought of the music and the simplicity of it, as they just did not get it yet. We were far from punks, just kids who were sick of the boring music of the time and wanted music that came from the begining of rock- 3 minutes of high energy music that made you dance(anyone remember the pogo?) no more no less. This DVD is the real deal, not the phony placebo garbage that started when the so called new wave era started when the record executives saw that they could make some cash and tried to have bands sound punk and look punk(punk was an additude not a look). So if some of you kids want to see and hear this additude pick this up and you'll know what the true so called punks of that era were doing- just having fun and to put it mildly that was the keyword of that era FUN. Pick it up and you'll be bopping and smiling throughout, as you'll in an instant that this music is the truely real punk that bands today still are trying to imitate but sadly a Ramones song says it all "You Don't Come Close". As you cannot fake a true additude, this dvd is the documented truth of that, and damn is it fun. .

Essential. Period.
Stop reading the reviews and buy it, already. Why are you reading this?
If you are a Ramones fan -- or a rock n roll fan -- you should already have this in your shopping cart and be checking out by now.

Over four hours of the Ramones live = musical nirvana.

Yeah, the sound quality of the early tracks is poor, but not as bad as you might think. Plus, let's face it, they weren't that great in September 1974, so who cares?

My only problem is with the guy who edited the December 31, 1977 London show. What's up with that? It's not only out of sequence but it looks like someone just got a video editing machine and was playing around with it for the first time. Neverthless, the show totally rocks as does the rest of the DVD.

If you like the Ramones you either already have this DVD or will have it soon. No reason to wait. The price is right ($15. 49? are you kiddin' me? That's a steal) and being able to watch the Ramones live whenever you want is too good to pass up.

Gabba gabba, baby.
