good 'un
I always found the dichotomy intriguing and kind of funny, in that uniquely Ramones sort of way. To me the album works, pop sheen/smooth production/whatever you wanna call it and all, because at the end of the day the Ramones were still totally weird and incapable of being anything other than the Ramones. Like putting lipstick on a pig. Plus, it's got mostly great songs. And frankly, I can't imagine "Don't Go" (one of these great songs of which I speak) sounding any other way.

The Ramones Take The Road To RUIN!
K. The Ramones 1981 release "Pleasant Dreams" was an O. album if you like it personally. I do, I always have. But upon viewing The Ramones history and catalog, it was with this album that the band began their long unraveling. Hindsight, of course, is 20/20 but it's also a BITCH! The legacy of the "Pleasant Dreams" album is shone upon even greater on the 2002 remastered/expanded reissue. Maybe it's best we DIDN'T KNOW that The Ramones were originally attempting to get back to their roots with this album, before that idea was scrapped and the Gouldman-gloss was applied! What I'm specifically referring to are the last four bonus tracks included on this disc, tracks 16-19, which ultimately show the band trying to "leave home" again or hop back on that "road to ruin. " All four of the cuts are solid, classic Ramones (even as rough and demo like as the recordings sound). Combine this with the ghastly sight of the ORIGINAL idea for the album's front cover, included beneath the CD tray, and a Ramones fan will want to weep all the more! Was there a logical reason as to why that cover art was rejected? While "Pleasant Dreams" has some moments ("All's Quiet On The Eastern Front," "Don't Go," "It's Not My Place," and my personal favorite of the album "Sitting In My Room"), there definitely is a "what could have been" with this album but ultimately wasn't! The fact that the famous Joey/Johnny feud started right around this time makes it an even sadder tale. In my opinion, Johnny was right about The Ramones. The Ramones were a band with a "shtick" and they should have stuck to that "shtick. " They were best when they were true to themselves and their image, no fan was expecting them to be like The Beatles and change their style with every record! The branching out heard on "Road To Ruin" and "End Of The Century" was fine because it ultimately didn't take away from the band being The Ramones, "Pleasant Dreams" went TOO FAR. And unfortunately, the band never recovered from this. R. I. P. Joey, Johnny, and Dee Dee. .

A bit too polished for my tastes
Where are the guitars? And why is Joey trying to sound like Mike Love? I can just see Johnny cringing when he got his acetate of the record, after being mixed. The songs are good, but the production is lousy.

some people hate this record
I'm completley biased because the first time I saw the Ramones it was in 1982 and this was their newest record. But I've always loved it. The songs are great and I always like the production much more than End of the Century (though I like that album a lot, too) and Subteranean Jungle (the only Ramones album I really don't like).

Try this one out, you might like. But make sure you have the first 4 and It's Alive.

And check out Mighty High. . . In Drug City.

Another Great Ramones Album!
I like all of the songs here with "We Want The Airwaves", "The KKK Took My Baby Away" and "711" being the stand-outs. Another great one from the long career of the Ramones. Great remaster with bonus material. These guys will never get the recognition they sooooo deserved and that is a real tragedy. Sadly the three main links are now gone. R. I. P. Joey, Johnny and Dee Dee. You will rock on forever.
