Anarchy in the East Bay, and it sounds great!
This one is 39 minutes of guitar-driven street-punk, and it's 39 minutes of loud, hard and fast goodness. While I do think Rancid is great at making ska- and reggae-influenced punk songs, I think "Rancid 5" is just as good, even though it doesn't contain any of the ska influence present on their previous albums. I'm not sure how many fans will favor the hardcore vibe of this album as opposed to earlier classics such as "Time Bomb" or "Ruby Soho", but to me, this album has everything punk should be. If you've ever been curious as to how Rancid would ever sound should they make a more hardcore-punk album, then I'm pretty sure you're gonna like this album a lot. Hopefully, it'll earn a spot in your music library soon, and will be cranked in your player as well! Thanks for the time, and peace.

Rancid's Most "Punk" effort, but...
I tend to lean towards the latter though. I'm not sure if this is my least favorite release by Rancid because I've listened to it the least or If I've listened to it the least because it's my least favorite.

This is by far Rancid's most "Punk" sounding record, which sounds like a great Idea, unfortunately for me the quality of the songs just isn't up to par to their other releases. Don't get me wrong I don't dislike this CD, quite the contrary. It's a Powerful, fast, unrelenting punk rock album the like of which Rancid had never done. If it were another band I'd probably give it 4 stars but Rancid has set the bar pretty High and to me this CD isn't as well rounded as the others and at times can be kind of one note. . . to be honest it seems as if Tim and Lars focused too much attention on the Far superior "Lars Frederiksen and the Bastards" CD released 7 months after this one.

Overall, Yes this CD is absolutely worth Buying, especially if you are looking for a more 'hardcore' sounding Rancid but It doesn't showcase all of Rancid's talents and styles as well as the others.

Worst album from my favorite band
Rancid is my favorite band, I have all of their CD's and know most songs by heart. Any music review is founded in opinion. I feel like they made this record to prove they were still punk, whatever that means these days. Personally I could care less about what gets labeled this or that. I didn't enjoy this record from first listen and it never grew on me. If I wanted loud nonsense I would have headed down to a local high school punk band show. These guys are better than this and it left me very dissapointed. My favorite Rancid discs are Life Won't Wait and Out Come the Wolves. If you enjoy their ska influenced songs look elsewhere.

Disappointment
But I believe that this album was created because of the backlash of fans who disliked them experimented and just wanted punk rock, nothing more. Rancid was at their best when doing the experimental ska and reggae of their previous album Life Won't Wait. Yeah, way to keep your integrity, Rancid.
As for this album, there are definitely some gems, but Rancid are at their best doing ska, reggae, or fun 70's style punk rock, like in . . . AOCTW or the Operation Ivy days. Only a select few songs on this record contain the Rancid spirit I've been seeing in their albums; and those are Radio Havana, Let Me Go, and It's Quite Alright, while nearly every song on Life Won't Wait and Wolves contain the "Rancid spirit". WTF is up with the vocals? Lars Frederiksen, you are NOT Iam MacKaye. Lars seriously sounds like he's trying to sound like Ian. And Tim, have you had one too many cigarettes back in those days?
Anyone saying that Rancid "returned to their roots" with this album could not be further from the truth. Ska, reggae, and fun punk rock, ARE the band's roots.

Overall, its just an okay record. I think this hardcore music should best be kept to bands that know how to do it. I'd rather listen to this than Indestructible though, for that album truly is destructible.

(and to all the "punk rawk" Rancid fans out there, if you want to comment on my review, please post something smarter and more constructive than "you're wrong, this is a great album", because that's all I've been seeing from you people lately).

A big disappointment from a great band
I don't mind that they went for a hardcore sound on this record rather than the ska and reggae sounds that were found on their two previous albums. I've been a Rancid fan since the first self-titled album, and this is easily their worst album. My problem is that these aren't hardcore songs done well. There is no build-up, contrast, or surprises in most of the songwriting that would warrant the monotonous angry tone. For songs so loud and fast, they simply don't rock as hard as they should. I love good hardcore music, and I love Rancid, but aside from a few classic tunes like Radio Havana, I don't regularly play anything on this disc. Their other albums are just so much better. .
