Bon Jovis of Finland?"
The Rasmus is a rock band from Finland that goes back to 1994, though I only got to know them in 2004. "I wish you were here tonight with me to see the Northern lights. Apparently, they have a lot of followers in Finland, Estonia, and Russia, and are gaining interest in Germany and England. Interestingly, when I first listened to this album it was not yet released in the United States.
This is their fifth album, and although the lyrics are not very original and the rhymes even more so (I am very particular to rhymes), the emotion seems to be very sincere. The melody is very simple and easy to catch on - which is why I had a feeling that Koreans would like this band (they do).
Their music is rock-- it's like a more pop version of Dream Theater and a man's version of Evanescence, energetic with a darkish flavour. Their style is very consistant in all their songs, and if I didn't know, I would have thought they were from New Jersey, not Finland. It would be an overstatement to say they are the Bon Jovis of Finland, but you get my point. I was also surprised at their English accent, no hint of Europe here, either.
My favorite song was track 3, which is not the title song, nor was mentioned in any of the main reviews. I didn't find the chorus section very tasteful, but the melody and lyrics were pretty. I thought it would be nice if it were included in the OST of American Pie 3. I can't say much for the movie, but as far as film soundtracks go, I guess that's a compliment.
My fatal desire
Their hard-rocking beats, moody lyrics, smooth vocals, and catchy melodies got me hooked on this Finnish band. With each release, the music of The Rasmus seems to mature and become more and more spectacular. This CD is arguably their best-- every song is worth a listen, and none are filler.
The album kicks off with "First Day Of My Life", a fast-paced rock song with an awesome bass line. Next is "In The Shadows", their immensely popular (and immensely catchy) single. I can listen to this song over and over again-- and every time, it's still nothing short of brilliant. Thing slow down a little for "Still Standing", but pick right up again with the crunchy, grinding "In My Life". "Time To Burn", one of my favorites, has a killer bass line and superb vocals. The vocals are also strong on "Guilty", with melancholy lyrics disguised beneath a fast beat. "Not Like The Other Girls", another favorite of mine, is a gorgeous, sweeping, rock masterpiece. Lead singer Lauri Ylonen's lyrics are at their peak. "The One I Love", angst-ridden and somber, is another great one. The Rasmus becomes slightly more punk with "Back In The Picture". And last, there is "Funeral Song". Arguably one of the greatest songs Lauri has ever written. His smooth, mournful vocals are at their best, as he soars through every sorrowful line of the bitter, yet short, song.
This CD has rarely left my player. I can listen to it over and over again. . . I simply cannot get enough of The Rasmus. I strongly recommend this CD, and this band, to anyone.
