Unique voice and great tunes I was intrigued by the lower register of his voice, as it gave something extra to the tunes. This was the first Chris Rea album I ever heard. Fine example of late 70's pop/rock. Better writing than many more popular artists of that period and style.
While this isn't his best ever, it is my personal favorite and made me a big fan of his music.
Deltics review
Full of rocky tunes with a few slow ones it really gets you hooked on earl Chris Rea. Deltics is the second album from Chris Rea and after all these years it stands the test of time.
Typical of the late 70's I suppose
Through time I've softened my stance on this album and in my humble opinion is worthy of a 4 star rating. This release deserves 4 stars.
Depending on what type/era of songs you like from Chris will determine how much you enjoy this album.
In a nutshell? It definitely brings me back to the Carter era!!
Kind of a despressing era wasn;t it? lol It has that late 70's vibe throughout.
Yes, It's got those Chris Rea trademarks throughout and i hear Springsteen thrown in for good measure whicbh is not a bad thing.
When I rate this against some of his later material, I find his later output a bit more consistent and satisfying to my ears. This album to me sounds very dated verses an album such as "On the beach" or "Blue Cafe".
I do enjoy "Things Lovers should Do" , the funky guitar licks on "Dance (Don't Think)", and the riffs heard on "Cenotaph - Letter from Amsterdam". The title track and "Diamonds" are also very nice too.
It was well worth what I paid for it, and I would gladly recommend it to the next person.
.
Australian hit single only
The rest of the album is representative of the sound of music in 1979. This is the album which features 'Diamonds', released as a single in Australia in 1979, and did very well.
Note that none of his compilations include Diamonds, simply because it wasnt released as a single overseas. You guys dont know what you missed.
not his best, but still darn good
Whatever Happened to Benny Santini was a hard act to follow. Chris Rea took more control in his 2nd album, and he scores on most of the tracks, in spite of hints at disco. The best tunes on this CD are Twisted Wheel, Cenotaph, Raincoat and a Rose and Diamonds. It is a must buy for die hard fans, but beginners should start with Santini, Road to Hell or New Light Through Old Windows.
