BUY THIS ALBUM! "It's Martini Time" is a mix of their signature rocking psychobilly style and some awesome slower tracks. Reverend Horton Heat one of my favourite bands, and this album is one of their very best. Jim Horton is an amazing lyricist and for this reason he is always a pleasure to listen to, Track 12 is my favourite, "Or is it just me"-omg *sigh*.
Thank-you amazon! I could not find this album anywhere in Australia, where I live. Seriously, the shop assistant at my local music shop laughed at me when I asked about it!.
The Call Up
Well. . The Reverend has hit it big. After recording 3 records for Sub Pop, the band jumped to a major label & put out "It's Martini Time" on Interscope back in '96. In addition, their drummer, Taz, left to go work w/ Izzy Stradlin on "110 Degrees" & current Supersucker, Scott Churilla, took over the drum stool.
If ya love Horton Heat, you'll love this record. Because he never puts out a bad one. If you're looking for maturity & growth, go find some wimpy emo band playing in a coffee shop. This ain't that band. Just another smokin' hot collection of 14 great songs. You get psychobilly speedsters, mid-tempo romps & a couple more vintage "send-up" songs that are bring-you-to-your-knees funny. Highlights include "Big Red Rocket Of Love," "Slow," It's Martini Time," "Crooked Cigarette" & "Now, Right Now. " Xtra credit for the "brokeback" song "Cowboy Love" which was put out long before the film "Brokeback Mountain" hit theatres and a new phrase was coined. And "That's Showbiz" ends this disc in a semi-serious, semi-comedic way that will want you to press play one more time around.
The Rev has done it again
If you like Liquor in the Front, listen to it a few more times, then listen to this, then listen to both at the same time, and then clean up the mess in your pants. Another amazing release by Jim Heath and the gang, with such instant classics as Big Red Rocket of Love, It's Martini Time, Rock This Joint, Now Right Now, and basically every other song.
It's the Reverend
Buy it alread. You wouldn't be looking at this if you were not a fan.
a mixed bag
"Crooked Cigarette" and "Generation Why" really don't go anywhere and also suffer from some of the Reverend's dumbest lyrics, and a lot of the music feels like the band is just going through the motions. There are some great songs on this one, notably "Big Red Rocket of Love" and the title track, but a lot of it feels like filler. There are still enough high points to make this worth it for the fans, but this album can't hold a candle to "Full Custom Gospel Sounds" or "Liquor in the Front".
