His Best Effort Despite the Keening Lisa H. It remains brilliant. I keep coming back to this cd. Saw Damien in Wash. DC couple years ago. Again, brilliant.
That being said, I saw him as a solo act without Lisa. I wish I could pull her off this cd and listen to DR as I heard him in concert. He is very funny, neither sad nor a depressing git at all.
What has worn on me with this cd is LH. "Keen" as a noun or verb comes from the Irish Gaelic term "caoineadh" (to cry) and references to it from the seventh, eighth and twelfth centuries are extensive. " After a bit, I want to tell her to shove off, just as apparently DH did shortly before I saw him live. Her keening doesn't wear well at all and it has made me put this cd away for awhile several times.
Consistent
I purchased it a few years ago and it is still relevant in my collection. I enjoy this CD from beginning to end. An all around good pick if you enjoy similarly styled artists. Enjoy.
Superb album
His live albums are also fantastic. This is one of my favorite albums of all time from one of my favorite musicians of all time. I was even lucky enough to see him live when I lived near philly a few years ago. There is no one like Damien Rice. Anyone who hasn't listened to him, should listen to this CD. For those who do like Damien Rice, check out the two ladies who play in the group, (Lisa Hannigan and Vyvienne Long) they have excellent music also. Buy this CD, its a masterpiece.
A must have
The all album is great, what a great musician, and with Lisa Hannigan. Damien Rice is so passionate, you can hear on the music that he creates. . . what a duo!! Higly recommend! .
Terrific voice, AWFUL songwriting
Is it becuase of his voice? That's probably a lot of it - he does have a superb voice. When I see all the glowing reviews for Damien Rice's "O", I find myself scratching my head. Is it because people like cookie-cutter, trite songs that they've heard done 120 different ways? I'd like not to think so, but maybe.
His songwriting skills on this album are weak at best. These sort of lyrics are so overdone, so common to the genre, and so shallow, it's nauseating. Sure, I suppose his songs are "pretty," or whatever the usual reaction is, but what do they really say? Absolutely nothing. There is no depth to these lyrics at all, and they're extremely repetitive.
If he ever manages to write some decent songs, he'll be fantastic. That voice is undeniably strong. Until then, there are much better options available to you.
