Nice collection of his lesser-known songs. This collection focuses exclusively on his late '70s and early '80s ballads--while definitely not definitive, it serves its purpose. I was lucky enough to find this CD at a local shop at a good price and its musical selection is quite good. Smokey is one of the best singer/songwriters of all time and this fine anthology allows us to revisit some of his lesser-known (but still gorgeous) love songs. Buy it if you can find it!.
Cheapo hit CD thrown together after "Motown 25"
After the surge in interest in all things Motown after the "Motown 25" TV special, this pretty bad compilation CD appeared in the stores. This piece of marketing foof doesn't begin to do justice to the legendary Smokey Robinson. The title song was a midchart hit and not very good, therefore a weak draw for the record. Far worse than that was the exclusion of any early solo hits except for "Baby Come Close. " Clearly a superficially-executed disc for the superficial fan who didn't realize the man existed before "Cruisin'". ". . . and All The Great Hits"??? They have got to be kidding.
Hopefully soon to fall out-of-print in favor of the FAR superior "Ultimate Collection" and "Solo Anthology. ".
I Always Dug this Set
Being With You,Crusin,Tell Me Tomorrow are Some Of the Great Songs here. Smokey Robinson is one Of The Greatest Writers&Producers ever&this Set Highlights SOme Of His Many Great Songs. His Voice as his Work are Timeless a True Genius&Legend.
Just a Touch away from Great
'Don't Play Another Love Song,' 'Just Like You', and 'Just a Touch Away' (originally recorded as a duet with High Inergy) are found only on this collection and they are all wonderful. For the die-hard Smokey fan, this CD is well worth the price, mainly due to a handful of titles; 'Blame It On Love,' and 'Tell Me Tomorrow,' (two very good songs) are difficult to find on CD.
The remaining tunes can be found on just about every other Smokey Robinson Greatest hits album.
What would've made this compilation superb is the addition of such hits as 'Quiet Storm,' 'Virgin Man,' 'Mother's Son,' 'Best For Last,' 'And I Don't Love You' and 'Train Of Thought. ' Great songs that all got air play.
Not a really exciting CD.
The only reason why I purchased it is because as a DJ, I have to cater to the segment of the population who are in love with Smokey's music. I am not very excited with this album, after listening to it. Apart from Cruising and Being with you, the CD is pretty lackluster.
