Wonderful Piece of Art
Since then, I gathered any SR music I could get my hands on before the internet made it easier. It was with this album that this California kid, spending a summer as an exchange student in Ecuador, was introduced to the mesmerizing beauty of Silvio Rodriguez's lyrics and music.
I might not agree with his politics, but that all disappears when I'm marinating in his comforting, challenging, intoxicating achievement.
It's not just music to hear and love. It's a field of study.
'Dias y Flores' en la vida que nunca pueda olvidar....('Days and Flowers' in life that you will never forget)
The subject matter in these songs runs the gamut of subjects, and the range of musical styles covered here are wonderful. This beautiful album showcases the depth of Silvio Rodriguez's beautiful Spanish style guitar in the genre of Nueva Trova (this originated in Cuba in the 1960s and fused traditional Spanish music with more contemporary style, like rock music). Martinez, a prolific composer and performer, wrote all of the songs on this album himself and performs them with a heightened passion and spirit that really touches the soul. "Sueno Con Serpientes" (Dream with Serpents) and "En El Claro de La Luna" (In the Light of the Moon) are two great examples of this. " Translation: "There are men who fight for a day and are good. There are others who fight for a year and are better. There are those who fight many years and are very good. But there are those who fight all of their lives. These are the ones who are irreplaceable. ") The song is rich with lyrics alluding to the glory of the fight -- at least that is how I chose to interpret them. You can come to your own conclusion about them. "En El Claro de La Luna" in inspired by the beautiful "Claire de Lune" by the classical composer, Claude Debussy. The tune melds elements from the classical piece with stunningly beautiful lyrics that are absolutely mesmerizing. I just wish that they were translated into English to non-Spanish speakers. In the light of the moon/where I want to go to play/sleeps the fortunate queen/who has to wake up in the dawn") I really recommend that you buy this CD, regardless of your Spanish proficiency, because, truly the music speaks for itself. For Spanish speakers, the words will speak to your heart and move you profoundly.
One of his best albums
Today is a true classic, and it's a must to anyone who collects or likes his music. When he launched this album back in the mid seventies, it became an immediate success both in Cuba and abroad, especially in all of Latin America and Spain. Días y Flores (Days and Flowers) contains some of his best poetry and of his best music. It proves that Silvio is an artist in the broadest sense of the word.
