One of the Stones' best, for sure!
Uncle Sam stuck my young butt in Vietnam in 1966, but while there I was able to purchase a small reel-to-reel tape recorder. Mick and the Boys were the biggest, bestest thing going in the 60s, and I bought everything they cranked out back then. Okay, so you youngsters don't know what that is. That's okay. I asked my brother to send this album (Aftermath) to me and after getting it, a friend converted his stereo phonograph to something we could dub our records to tape with. Sounds crude, but it worked very well. Aftermath got played all the time over there, at least when you didn't hear the incoming fire. GREAT album. I play it often today. .


NOT a Hybrid SACD!!!!!!!!!
I'm sure I'm in the minority but I ordered this because it was billed as a Hybrid SACD. I know and love this music but I gave this disc one star because I did not get what I ordered! I usually have great luck ordering from Amazon but not this time. . . . . . it is not! It is simply a regular CD that was remastered using the DSD process. This is too bad since I was planning on ordering at least eight more Rolling Stones SACDs. However,since I have no way of knowing if they actually are SACDs, I'll have to rethink this. So just as a warning to the other few people out there looking for Rolling Stones SACDs, proceed at your own risk. If anyone out there can verify that some of these that you got from Amazon are really SACDs, it would be greatly appreciated. I know they are available as SACDs. . . . . . I have some already that I got elsewhere.


Paint it great?
K. I haven't heard the original U. cut, but the U. S. version of "Aftermath" was a real triumph for the Rolling Stones. It was the first record composed solely of material written by Jagger and Richards, and it's great stuff--twangy, bluesy, oily, sharp, and crisp as hell. Richards' guitar sounds like a carriage ride into the underworld. And even if "Paint It, Black" sounds like a one-way ticket to that place--which means it sounds pretty darn great--the cat-eyed "Under My Thumb" is the highlight of the record. They hadn't quite figured out how to channel their, for lack of a better term, bitchyness yet, so this cut of the album sounds a little too even. Still, it was the first gem the Stones cut. And for those who point to "Thumb" and "Stupid Girl" as misogynism, Jagger himself said it best: "Any bright girl would understand that if I were gay I'd say the same thing about guys. ".


The Left Hand to Between The Buttons Right Hand
Aftermath and Between The Buttons. I am the Stones Authority. Buy them together. That should be required. What an incredibly prolific period for the Stones and what great songs and albums - released within about 6 months of each other. "Paint It Black", "Lady Jane" and "Under My Thumb". Wow. Very cool. Then there are other great tracks like "Think", "Flight 505" and "I Am Waiting". At this point in a lot of band's careers they are starting to run a little thin on material, what is remarkable about this period and this work is that the Stones are actually just getting warmed up. A lot of band's would have been happy to point to such a period in their career as their high water mark. Again, the Stones were just warming up. Aftermath and Between the Buttons - two more examples of the depth and greatness of this band. .


I'm Married To Me
"Under My Thumb" and "Stupid Girl" address universal frustrations. When charged with misogyny, Mick Jagger replied, "[A]ny bright girl would understand that if I were gay I'd say the same things about guys" (RS, June 1978). And frustrations are what the Stones have always set out to celebrate, deconstruct and demolish ~ simultaneously. Monkey business. "Doncha Bother Me. " Two's a crowd. Sullen, surly, narcissistic and disinterested. With riffs. But enough of that, let's talk about ME now. I'm married to me! I could not foresee this thing happening to you. And sometimes the kitty tiffs are atrocious! But, ah well, the pleasures of making up make it all worthwhile. "Don't smoke in bed, stupid girl. " "That's MISTER stupid girl to you.
