Great collection but skips too much
There are only 3 songs here that pre-date "Satisfaction", creating a poor overview of their early period. "Hot Rocks" was certainly a popular album in its day, but on reflection, it is woefully incomplete. The set then rushes through the rest of the band's catalog up to and ending with the "Sticky Fingers" album and the two hits from it. This is an OK collection for the more casual fan who wants most of the major hits, but the followup set "More Hot Rocks" is far more interesting overall, scooping up the hits that this set missed plus giving the more involved Stones fan a good number of rarities. "Hot Rocks" seemed to have been put together hastily, but great tracks are in abundance, no question about that. There just doesn't seem enough of them.


Hot Rocks Rolling Stones
Not much else needs to be said. A classic. Anyone that wants to learn about the Rolling Stones, THIS is the album.


Great - but Skimpy
However, 21 songs on two CDs seems a little skimpy, and Hot Rocks leaves out a number of hits, important album tracks, and entire portions of their musical history. When Hot Rocks was released in 1972 on vinyl, it was the definitive Stones compilation. Rolled Gold+, released in late 2007, provides a thorough summary of the Stones 60's music, 40 songs on 2 discs, including all 21 songs from Hot Rocks and 15 songs from More Hot Rocks. I would recommend passing on this album (and More Hot Rocks) in favour of the much more satisfying Rolled Gold+.


Remastering makes for a new experience
This re-mastered recording (assuming you're using decent equipment) is an audible improvement. Let's face it: early Stones albums (and the cds that were based on them) were pretty poorly engineered. Bass lines have more oomph, yet are more musical. Back up vocals are more distinct. Everything sound less tinny. It's not like an entirely new recording, but they have done a remarkable job considering the material with which they had to work. Whether or not this the best early compilation I won't argue: it is what it is (and I think it's pretty good). If you want to hear the early recordings of the Stones sound better than they ever have, buy it. .


Hot Rocks rocks!
A superb blend of old time blues and funk combined with sweet and haunting, symphonic melodies behind the gritty and powerful vocals of Mick Jagger. A truely brilliant album! An awesome addition to anyones music colection. A blast from the past for some, a novel encounter for others, but one thing is for sure, the timelessness of this album is sure to please everyone! This is classic rock and roll at it's finest! A true masterpiece! .
