it's just "like floating in pure musical ecstasy and emotion" It is indeed a shame that Nelson Riddle passed away before this project was completed; but what we do get here is nothing but the best music from two incredibly gifted artists. --Linda Ronstadt
Linda Ronstadt does a great job of singing these songs on this CD; it's great for fans of Linda and Nelson Riddle alike. The quality of the sound on this CD is excellent and I really like that artwork, too.
"When You Wish Upon a Star" begins the album with a charming song that I could never tire of hearing; Linda's sensitive rendition is nothing short of sublime. The piano arrangement is very easy on the ear; and Linda never falters, either! Her excellent diction enhances her performance all the more and that's grand. "Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered" showcases Linda Ronstadt's outstanding phrasing; she sings this with all her heart and soul and it's easily another major highlight of this CD.
"You Go to My Head" shines brighter than silver and gold when Linda does this one up right; she delivers this with panache and I'm very impressed. "But Not For Me" is a Gershwin tune that gets the royal treatment; the music is just right but wisely the musicians never try to steal the show away from Linda--her vocals are front and center! In addition, listen for Linda to do great justice to "My Funny Valentine;" this poignant ballad uses the strings to great advantage and Linda never lets go of a superfluous note.
"I Get Along Without You Very Well" is very pretty; and I especially like that stunning interpretation of "Am I Blue. " "Am I Blue" amazes me when Linda sings it; Ethel Waters would surely have loved Linda's treatment of "Am I Blue. "
"I Love You for Sentimental Reasons" has some mighty fine backup vocalizing--not that Linda really needs it; but they do sound pretty good anyway. The musical arrangement for "I Love You for Sentimental Reasons" fits in perfectly with Linda's vocals; and it's a true gem on this album. "Straighten Up and Fly Right" is a song I first heard performed by Nat "King" Cole; and Linda doesn't disappoint on "Straighten Up and Fly Right. " "Little Girl Blue" is very nicely done; and the CD ends perfectly with Linda Ronstadt performing "'Round Midnight. " "'Round Midnight" is so well done that it lacks absolutely nothing--this music is all THAT good.
Linda Ronstadt remains one fine songbird; and of course Nelson Riddle and his singular talent will never be forgotten. This is a must-have for Linda Ronstadt fans; and people who enjoy classic pop vocals arranged by Nelson Riddle will cherish this CD forever. .
For sentimental reasons
Excellent orchestration matching the clarity of Ronstadts voice perfectly. For sentimantal reasons is the last in the series of collaborations between Riddle and Ronstadt. Probably the collection containing most widley recognised songs and very very easy to listen to. Haven't heard as nice a version of "You go to my head " since Keely Smith.
Gotta Love Linda
It brings back memories I treasure. This CD is absolutely wonderful. You will not be disappointed with the sound and Linda's fabulous voice. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys this type of music.
Ronstadt's credibility grab
)
Poor Nelson Riddle - had to DIE to finally get his picture on the album art!
He's the main artist working the magic here, and he does a lovely job updating his sound for the seductive 80's - especially that glistening electric guitar!
Ronstadt was SUCH a major radio menace with all her soulless pop hits, it's a shocker she got the courage to take on the Sinatra songbook - and miracle she does as well as she does. 5 stars, 4, 3 maybe - I so go back and forth!
(Note: Elektra hasn't put the 'trilogy' together in one package yet, but I'm reviewing as if they have.
No, she doesn't have Sinatra's vulnerability, dignity or pathos (who does?), she's got her technical precision, though - and that's a fine enough basis for the endeavor.
Ronstadt is weakest on the big, bad suicide songs ("Goodbye," "'Round Midnight," etc. ) but comes off charming as all get-out on the fluffier ditties ("Falling In Love Again," "For Sentimental Reasons," etc. ). Swoon.
Consider this cordial music, dreamy music, lingerie music. It's credible, even delicious at times.
Romantic music
We previously owned the albums on records. Very enjoyable mood and listening music. We are enjoying these wonderful renditions with Nelson Riddle's orchestra again.
