Putting the world on notice They channel Weezer by way of Jellyfish with a weird dose of prog-rockers likeQueen or Electric Light Orchestra. There's a lot of derivative fun to be taken from the second album from California popsters Rooney. Add the teeny-bopper good looks of Robert Schwartzman (Jason's younger bro and cousin to Nicholas Cage) and the sixties style cover pose, and you get a band that craves both the sugar and the success. "Calling The World" makes good on that intent.
Starting with the crafty title track, "Calling The World" delivers hooks so thick that this almost sounds like a greatest hits collection. "Are You Afraid" plays the processed vocals like "Mr Blue Sky," yet the guitar lines that open "What For" are pure George Harrison. Both "I Should Have Been After You" and the lead single "When Did Your Heart Go Missing" sound like they should have been in an 80's John Hughes movie. There's even a hint of Genesis or The Cars in "Love Me Or Leave Me," that is if either of those bands were fronted by George Michael.
There's so much sugar to be had on "Calling The World" that it eventually gets to be too much. The sense that Rooney needs an identity of its own starts to creep into the guilty pleasure of it all. Keane's Perfect Symmetry explored this territory a bit more effectively early in 2009, but if power-prog-pop is your candy of choice, "Calling The World" will give you a sugar-buzz like few others since Jellyfish or the long lamented Rubinoos.
AWESOME CD !
This is a wonderful, upbeat CD, still listening to it after all these months !.
ehhh
If you thought their first was to poppy, then this one will drive you nuts. There first cd was much much better. There are a few good songs that aren't annoying, so if you can find this one cheap for the handful of songs then it could be worth it.
calling my friends and telling them about this cd
I first heard this group on myspace listening to their hit single, you guessed it, "When did your heart go missing. take it from me, a black guy who loves rock n roll; well half black. " the sound was pure, and much of their music was compared to that of old rock n roll. Thats when it dawned on me, real rock n roll still exists through Rooney much like the band JET. (still there are other bands with good quality rock: Maroon 5, Fall out boys, alternative sound) I am a hip hop/ r&b/ soul fan, so i set out on a rock venture to discover new music. So i found the catchy instrumental tunes of Rooney, with a pop rock sound from the 80's, you'll be rockin all night. .
best 80s music since, uh, the 80s
my first reaction to some of these songs was to giggle hysterically. ha, i loved this. . . it sounds like they're just mocking 80s songs, while still managing to make an enjoyable, rocking album.
In that vein, my favorites were immediately "When Did Your Heart Go Missing?", "Are You Afraid?", and "All in Your Head", all of which are just ridiculous, in a good way. "Tell Me Soon" and "I Should've Been After You" have also really grown on me.
