oustandingawesome cd, with the one only chris oliva on guitar, what a talent, sadly he died in car accident in 1993, but his music lives on.
Sophomore scorcher
The song structures of these heavy metal stompers are generally mid paced though at times though the band makes regular forays into hystrionic assaults on the senses, Washed Out and Skull Session both moving up the gears into overdrive. Savatages second entry into The Book of Heavy Metal (as Swedish mob Dream Evil might say) is a collection of traditional heavy metal in the vein of Judas Priest or mid 70's Scorpions with less over the top axework and, of course, lower register vocals from Jon Oliva.
The songs here are almost uniformly short and sharp metal blasts that are well played, passionate blasts - only the slowburn stomper title track pushing past the five minute mark. All of which makes this quite a different feel of an album from some of the more ornate, almost progressive offerings of mid and later years albums.
As I'm reviewing the non remastered version I suppose some listeners could find issue with the production though the simple and honest recording values enclosed herein are actually perfectly suited for these sonic cruise missiles as they older production values at least allow the songs to breath, some of them such as Unusual almost falling over themselves in their quest for slow paced critical mass. And I mean the production was done by Max Norman who knew what he was doing, ya know?
As per later albums such as the debut and Hall of the Mountain King the lyrical concerns are varied but also almost uniformly gothic in some form or another, exceptions being the more mainstream lyrically compositions of Hard for Love and Stuck On You which despite their more everyday bent are actually perfectly suited to the album and fit in nicely, actually providing a form of variety that enriches the album.
Savatage deserved a heck of a lot more respect for this great album full of jagged traditional metal full of tight playing, passion and some great galloping riffs courtesy of Criss Oliva - check out Necrophilia for one such example. And Jon Oliva has the perfect voice for this mid 80's barnstormer being able to growl and screech as the occasion demands. A very good buy for fans of traditional metal, power metal and fans of bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden (for you old skool punters) and mobs like Dream Evil and a whole swag of traditional metal outfits in the 00's.
Classic CD!
Savatage is such a great band and this CD along with Sirens and Dungeons are Calling is amongst their best.
one of the most true of heart power metal albums ever recorded
this is a true classic that will stand the test of time as one of the most inspirational albums ever of its kind. hello metallians, this cd belongs in every metal collection there is, this cd is one of the most true and die hard power metal albums you will ever hear, it is classic, like helloweens walls of jherico, and priests painkiller, and megadeths rust in piece. the guitars on this album thanks to the god himself(r. i. p. bud) are some of the best riffs and solos ever recorded, his fingers had to have gushed blood like a fountain after the recording session. some of the most timeless power metal songs ever can be found on this album. like shes unusual, or the title track, or the anthemic rocking ballad in the middle. this is one of the center pieces in my huge power metal collection and is sure to be playing in my cd player when i am old and in a home. your friend and brother in metal brandon whitson 25 of north carolina.
ps. if you like this you absolutely have to get gutter ballet and hall of the mountain king and edge of thorns. and dont forget sirens.
Raise the fist of the metal child!
Forget spandex and power ballads, this is metal for metal's sake. Power of the Night was Savatage's third release, and follows the same path as Sirens and Dungeons Are Calling. Songs like Power of the Night and Warriors are pure metal anthems, and are great representatives of the early American power metal sound. The Oliva brothers continue to improve their songwriting abilities, though there are a few less than stellar moments (i. e. Skull Session). Savatage had not yet moved into their epic rock opera stage, so enjoy Power of the Night for what it is - fast and furious power metal madness!
NOTE: While the standard version of Power of the Night is a bargain, you may want to spend a few more dollars on the German import reissue by SPV. It hasn't been remastered, but the 2002 SPV reissue does have a few extras that make it a better buy. It features 2 additional tracks - live versions of Power of the Night and Sirens, but the real bonus is that the liner notes have been expanded to include several pages of very detailed information about the band during this particular stage of their career. When added to the chapters from the other SPV Savatage reissues, you'll get the real story behind one of the best (and most underrated) metal bands of all time.
