another good album from the 'tage
best songs for me are,of rage and war, gutter ballet, temptation relevation and when the crowds are gone. this isn't as great as the hall of the mountain king but,I have to say that it is a classic album nonetheless. other might be okay to some but not for me. wouldn't pay a hefty price for it but it is worth checking out. cheers!.

Hard Rock
I liked there music much more than I thought. My step brother introduced me to this band, and there music rocks! The best two songs are When the Crowds are gone and Summers Rain.

Savatage CD - Gutter Ballet
I knew they were the predecessor to the now famous Trans-Siberian Orchestra but had missed out on some of their best music. I've had a couple of Savatage CDs for about 3 years now. I listened to Gutter Ballet and saw how much I was missing. Great guitar work, superb vocals througout. I've since ordered more of the older Savatage CDs. Love the metal.

Hello From The Gutter(Wrong Band, But I Couldn't Resist)
It's not full blown symphonic like Dead Winter Dead, there are certainly enough rockers on this album, but it seems as though Savatage were still testing the waters. With Gutter Ballet, Savatage pushes themselves a bit further into symphonic territory.
"Gutter Ballet" was the title of a musical play that producer Paul O'Neill had written in hopes of taking it to Broadway. It was the rock opera we all would come to know as the "Streets" album. but guitarist Criss Oliva loved the title so much they decided to use it, even using one of the songs from the play("When The Crowds Are Gone") just to see what the reaction would be. Though Gutter Ballet has it's share of great rockin' metal tunes, the most talked about track seems to be "When The Crowds Are Gone", and deservedly so. In my opinion it's not an easy task for a metal band to pull off a ballad without sounding a bit silly. Sure, some bands have pulled it off nicely, but it's still risky. Vocalist Jon Oliva, hands down one of the best metal vocalists ever, really pushes himself to new depths here. I can honestly say that Savatage can do a ballad like no one else out there. A little over the top? Maybe. A bit too heavy on the emotion? A bit pompous? Yes, perhaps. But still I say that like it or not, no one does ballads like Savatage. This kind of sound went over with audiences very well(though there are still many who didn't welcome this change), and it began to feature very prominently in the rest of Savatage's recordings.
Another symphonic instrumental, "Temptation Revelation", is featured, and the title track is a symphonic, piano laden rocker that would also become quite common to Savatage's sound.
Most of the album is straight up rockers of a hit and miss quality, though I can honestly say that none of them are bad. "She's In Love" was never one of my fave's, but I'd rather listen to that song than a lot of other stuff floating around out there.
Needless to say, a great album with Savatage continuing to up the ante.

Awesome album from one of the best metal bands~~"EVER"
I was stationed in Germany when this was released back in '88. . . . a friend turned me on to Savatage, he was a Savatage freak. . . . . I couldn't stop listening to this album when i bought it. . . . . still, to this day, it's one of my all time favs. . . . . . Criss Oliva had a guitar style all his own, as did his brother Jon have a voice that no one will ever be able to impersonate. . . . . a rare gem of an album, from a great metal band. . . . . I'll always love these guys. . . . I remember living down in Ft. Myers, Florida. . . . listening to the "1" good rock 'n' roll station on the radio that transmitted from up here in the Tampa area, and they would always talk about Savatage playing in some of the local gig spots throughout the area. . . . . this is before they hit it bigtime. . . . . . I never thought they would get as big as they did, but i'm definitely glad they did. . . . hat's off to 'em. . . . . . long live Criss Oliva's spirit.
