It's Boz, Of Course It's Good If, like me, you're a Boz Scaggs fan you will love it. Over all I like it. A couple of comments that I can make; An album of standards like this, needs to stay a little more mainstream with the song selection. I was raised on this kind of music and I love all of it but from a sales standpoint I think a couple more really recognizable songs could help, also this sparce orchestration sounds good but after a whole album the over all sound begins to sound much the same. I know this sounds strange but I love the sound, the sax work is very reminiscent of Paul Desmond's work with Dave Brubeck. Maybe some bigger more orhestrated numbers could have broken the sameness of the album. As I have said I love the album and all of his work, .
Boz Scagg's best
If you're looking for something to listen to at night with your loved one next to a warm, crackling fireplace, you've just come across some of the best you can find. One of the most romantic, sultry, and well sung smooth jazz albums of it's kind, with lyrics sung so soft and so caressing.
"A New, Intensely Satisfying World of Expression"
He and the other fine musicians of this quartet were generous guides into a new, intensely satisfying world of expression. "It was Paul who encouraged me to go into the books and dig out these songs and find my voice in each one. " ~ Boz Scaggs ~
Recorded in 2003, "But Beautiful, Standards Vol. 1" is Boz Scaggs initial venture into the beautiful and eternal catalogue of the Great American Songbook and I must say that it is absolutely breathtaking. Its novelty will never wear off. The material is tastefully-selected from the books of some of the most brilliant composers and lyricists of all-time such as George and Ira Gershwin, Rodgers and Hart, Mitchell Parish, Duke Ellington, Jimmy Van Heusen and Johnny Burke from among others.
With the able support of his great quartet namely Paul Nagel (piano), Eric Crystal (sax), John Shiffett (bass) and Jason Lewis (drums), the Grammy-winning singer, songwriter and guitarist all-rolled-into-one has carefully chosen the most-loved standards of all-time and seasoned them with new flavors. Mr. Scaggs has created a warm, relaxed and intimate setting to showcase his own interpretations of each of the ten songs resulting in an ageless and adorable album of standards that can be enjoyed now and forever.
While I'm very pleased with the entire recording, my ears are especially drawn to "How Long Has This Been Going On," "Sophisticated Lady" and of course the title track "But Beautiful" rendered in simple and relaxed yet very memorable fashion that if someone would ask me for favorite versions of these songs, his renditions will spring to mind instantly.
I'm extremely glad that with this album and the subsequent released of Speak Low, Boz Scaggs has joined the torch-bearers of the Great American Songbook who are endlessly working on the preservation of standards and its introduction to young generation who are new to this genre and can truly appreciate its ageless appeal. Kudos to Mr. Scaggs for an intelligent decision. It's the way to go! For sure, I'll be looking forward to the succeeding volumes.
With my heartfelt recommendation.

Wow! Fantastic!!!
Not another old rocker trying to do standards (just listen to that horrible job put out by Rod Stewart. When I heard that Boz Scaggs had a jazz album out, I groaned. . . ugh!)Thank goodness I stumbled across "What's New?" on I-tunes, I was blown away and had to listen to the rest of the album. Wow! I thought, this is really fantastic. "What's New" is a tune I hadn't liked previously to listening to his wonderful arrangement, I am now hooked. I bought the album and must say Boz Scaggs has done a great job. His voice is gorgeous and the arrangements are A-1! Great album, I can't wait to buy his next jazz album.
Smoky jazz bar......
. . . with an after dinner brandy & a cigarette is what I call this one (LOL) Always loved Boz from back in the day, so when I ran across this, I didn't hesitate buying it. Mr. Scaggs voice is soothing against soothing music. Makes for perfect background sound no matter what you're doing.
