Silk Degrees and Middle Man-must have blue eyed soul Boz has soul, he rocks and is jazzy too! The vinyl copies I have are gathering dust but the CD's are among my top 50 that I frequently listen to. Even though Silk Degrees was recorded three plus years before Middle Man, I have to listen to the two works as if they were a double album. I mainly listen to these in my car so I can't comment on how good the technical specs are on the CD releases, they sound great to me! I rarely find myself singing along when I listen to music but I find myself joyfully joining in on many of the tracks on both of these CD's. From my perspective, Middle Man picks up where Silk Degrees left off. I only have one other Boz Scaggs CD, Some Changes. It is good but it does not have the replay value of Silk Degrees or Middle Man. These two albums are must haves IMHO. These CD's are bargain priced so do yourself a favor and get them both, queue them up and enjoy.
Lives up to the hype
Boz deserved the success he got after this. This doesn't have a bad track on it from start to finish. Five of the album's 11 tracks were hits and the album tracks are just as good. If you like jazz/rock/pop music you won't want to miss this one. The remastering job is also first-rate. Do yourself a favor and pick this up.
Boz Scaggs-Timeless Treasure
Silk Degrees can easily be considered part of the sound track for the late 70's early 80's. This is an easy review, just a case of replacing a worn copy of the vinyl with a CD. You could get away with renaming it Greatest Hits.
Imagine a breezy Sunday summer evening, on the top deck of a house-boat, floating at anchor, in a cove, on a lake, listening to Boz's silky satin voice. . . . . That was the setting for the sound track many times. Those memories are refreshed every time I hear these songs, the boat's been sold and the girl moved to Virginia but, as the song says "You Can't Take the Memories".
Timeless and brilliant
D. 1976 was an epic year for great albums - Eagles' 'Hotel California', Jackson Browne's 'Pretender' and J. Souther's 'Black Rose' to name just three - and 'Silk Degrees' is right up there with the greats.
Commercially, 'Silk Degrees' was a slow starter, looking like it might sell 200-300,000 copies. But DJs gave "Lowdown" a lot of airplay, word got around and the album became a five-million-seller, charting for 115 weeks and yielding three hit singles. Truly a breakthrough album for Boz Scaggs.
And this success was richly deserved. 'Silk Degrees' is a seamless blend of pop, rock and blues, classy, stylish, beautifully performed and produced. Every song is memorable. The album's tone was 'balmy nights beside the pool'.
This legacy production has been beautifully if subtly remastered, restoring all and more of the clarity that was so noticeable on the vinyl original but rather lacking in earlier CD versions. A great bonus here is the inclusion of marvellous live versions of "What Can I Say", "Jump Street" and "It's Over". If you've ever wondered whether Boz and the band could replicate the studio power of the songs in a live setting, here's the proof.
If you're not familiar with 'Silk Degrees', treat yourself. A great album.
Boz Scaggs' Best Album Ever Gets The Deluxe Remastering Treatment
There are many great songs here, especially "Lowdown and the full-tilt R&B-rocker "Lido Shuffle. SILK DEGREES is Boz Scaggs' best album ever, and it just got even better, with extra songs and a deluxe remastering treatment that's warm and close, not harsh and shrill. " If you have the old version, get rid of it after buying this CD.
