Customer Review Far above the average kiddie flick. But I do not, alas. Wish I had an I Q of 180. So I must work with what I have as best I can. Vitus is about a lad who does have stratospheric intellectual capacity, and how he works with what he has--navigates the treacherous rapids, descents, and falls of adolescence. . . adolescence, that stage of life wherein conformity to the herd is paramount, and to be perceived to be different can mean, at least, ostracism--if not destruction of one's personality, or even self-destruction. But Vitus survives. Vitus does not succumb. Vitus outwits the stupidities of his environment. Vitus lives. Vitus thrives. How he achieves this is the focus as well as denouement of the narrative, excellently directed by Fred M. Murer, whose work I have not much cared for until this remarkable film. Superbly acted by the two youngsters portraying Vitus at different stages, one of whom (Vitus in adolescence) is played by the gifted Teo Georghiu (actually performing the music). Bruno Ganz ("Downfall") is the endearing, and very wise, grandfather--one of the few in Vitus' immediate environment who provides support, and understanding--in a role that could not be different from his brilliant portrayal of Hitler ("Downfall"). This film was Switzerland's official entry for the academy award (Best Foreign Language Film category). But of course it did not and could not win. No gun shots, car chases, naked bodies or heavy breathing--caviar for the general. .
