SEPULNATION
In my opinion, Against is a stronger album than Nation, but Nation got good moments, like Revolt, Uma Cura, Saga and Ways of Faith. Nation is the second album of Sepultura with Derrick Green on the vocals, and by this time is clear that Derrick was growing as a better vocalist than in his debute Against. Like Against, Nation incorporate a hardcore sound in the old heavy metal of Sepultura, which makes you think that you are listening to a new band. Andreas Kisser is one of the greatest guitarrists of heavy music, and you can hear his talent in Nation. Well, Nation is a good album, but the best album with Derrick is Against, for sure.

Continuing to Refine the Sound
" Take your sour grapes elsewhere. Bullocks on anyone saying "stick with Soulfly. Listen to old Pantera, as a reviewer below suggested? Get real. I'm not going to knock Soulfly. But I will say, Sepultura continued and continues to evolve in cool ways. Jello Biafra contributing? Damn cool. The music and lyrics are tops. . . Derrick is a great vocalist, and the style continues to progress. .

Uninspired
No surprises there but I had expected better in terms of riffs or hooks. With the genre, you can expect the vocals and soloing to suck. Nothing. It's not a terrible album (if you like the genre) but it has little/nothing to offer. Save your money and listen to your old Pantera albums.

Dullsville

But that's not what I want. I guess if I wanted sub-Slayer thrash with a deeper vocals, muddy guitar lines and a production that reeks of utter modern mediocrity, I might buy this. As such, I don't particularly recommend this album. It's not absolute junk, but it's very, very sub-par.

why?
Yet I can't help feeling the riffs were better the first time they played them. For the most part the overall sound of this record is not that different from pre-Roots Sepultura. The listenable parts of this record are painfully mediocre rehashings of past ideas. Add one insufficient replacement singer, a few embarrassing duds, and you get a disgraceful waste of plastic you'd do well to avoid spending your hard earned cash on.

That's not to say ALL of it is offensively bad. "Uma Cura" reconstitutes Sepultura's normal half-step thrash sensabilities with focus on a busy bassline, latin percussion, and synth atmospherics. Then the chorus comes around with a delicious, bone-crushingly dissonant guitar riff. Ahh, but it's all too short. Maybe Andreas does have a few good licks left in him. As is the case with most of the songs, the singer is the worst feature, but years of nostalgia have bestowed upon me the ability to ignore Green's idiot metal-rap.

Another notable song (due to the bell curve) is "Vox Populi", which has a chorus riff that is surprisingly fun. "The Ways of Faith" carries an enjoyable atmosphere, even though the melody is more or less pointless. "Water" is okay, the obligatory soft guitar tune with bongos or something like that. "Valtio" is a bit cheesey and sounds like a combined tribute to the Lord of the Rings soundtrack and At the Gates. Still some of the stringstuff is intriguing and of course it offers rest from the overcooked sub-thrash that saturates the rest of the album. Is that distorted cello I hear?

I can sit through this record without paying it too much mind. The problem is that a good chunk of it has been done somewhere on one of their other albums. There's just no point to it when you can pop in Chaos A. D. and get the same thing. . . only fresher, heavier, nastier, and with a far better frontman.

P. S. : I subtracted a full half-star for the track "Politricks" because it literally made me laugh out loud.
