Furious hardcore mixed with great metal He shows his own style, and it's very good. Roorback is the best album from Sepultura with Derrick. Like Against and Nation, Roorback shows a furious hardcore mixed with metal. The truth is that Sepultura is a new band without Max, and it's a great band, for sure. The band is really connected and far more creative in this new Sepultura. Open your mind and forget Max, and you will find a great hardcore metal band.
Strong as Usual
As per Jeremy's review a few reviews down. . you don't know your Sabbath, son. Only two real singers came after Ozzy. Tony Martin, who was highly underrated, and Dio. Ian of Deep Purple did a one-off. Your argument for Helloween? I'd apply that to Sepultura. Derrick has expanded and made better along with Kisser and the rest of the Sepultura crew. Kiske was awesome. I very much disliked his replacement when I first heard him. New Helloween is decent. Classic, much better. New Sepultura? It's just an extension of the sound they developed on the last two albums with Max. Snagging Roorback with the bonus EP of covers? WELL WORTH IT!.
Very Average at Best.
Still no where near as good as the band was with Max. Atleast they are trying this time around.
Pros: Faster and more back to their roots than the other releases without Max at the helm. Guitar playing is passable.
Cons: Lack of solos. Derrick is still lacking as a vocalist. Just isn't as good as old Sepultura, songs lack hooks and are mostly forgetable.
Bottom Line: This album falls short of expectations. The current Sepultura is nothing more than a very average metal band at best. If you like old Sepultura I suggest you not waste your money on this, but then again you might like it. Buyer beware.
They still got it
Max left and hes not coming back get use to it, infact Max leaving was the best thing to ever happen to the band. I am so sick of these max heads flooding the reviews on all the new sepultura albums. Now before everyone gets on my case about that statement lets look at the facts. Soulfly's fist album was amazing I loved it there were only a few weak tracks on it. However Sepultura's fist album was also amazing, they proved to the world that they are a band with out max the only reason got so much trash talk was because Max was not in it. After Soulflys album that band has been on a great decline, and worst of all the next albums proved how unoriginal max is. Every song written was recycled roots are chaos AD lyrics and riffs, listen to them again if you dont believe me its all true. Sepultura has been on an improvement scale ever since Max left. Each album has gotten better and better. Roorback is the heaviest album yet Derrick vocals have greatly improved and the band went back to there old style of thrash. Granted its not backk to the arise days but its still the heaviest album to come out in this era especially with what the radio is passing off as metal today. Pick it up Derrick is an awsome vocalist and he can actually sing and also pick up their new DVD it was one of the best DVD's I picked up since Slayers Still Raining thats all I gotta say. Roorback is a great album and I have been a fan since the Arise days so you know I have a great taste in metal. .
A flawed and uneven album
" This album is the group's tenth album total, but only their third album without original vocalist Max Cavalera and with Derrick Green behind the mic. Following the failed commercial success of 2001's "Nation," Sepultura aborted their contract with Roadrunner records and signed with SPV records for the follow up, 2003's "Roorback.
Making an album without Sepultura's signature tribal drums has its pros and cons. On the plus side, "Roorback" is the group's heaviest album since Max left the band. But, on the other hand, this disc isn't as creative or all around as good as its predecessor, "Nation. " And now Sepultura sound like a traditional metal band, and maybe even a nu-metal one.
I believe Sepultura wanted to make this their "return to form" or "back to basics" album. But, unfortunately, I think this record is only a partially successful attempt at sounding like vintage Sepultura of old. The first problem is the rhythm section still suffers without a second guitar. Second, Andreaas totally omits guitar solos, and his riffs are usually still plenty fast, but they're not nearly as inspired as his "Arise" days.
Also, Derrick's singing style hasn't at all matured; he's still snarling and bellowing most of the time. He tries his hand at a bit of crooning, at the beginning of "Bottomed Out," but the results aren't good. And, sometimes, a song (like track eight, "Mind War") would have turned out much better if Derrick would have just shut his friggin' yap! Finally, too many of the songs aren't memorable because they lack strong hooks.
Fortunately, this album is, as a whole, muscular enough to prevent it from being a complete throw-away. Some songs, like tracks two, five, and twelve, don't really go anywhere or get off the ground, but "Apes of God," "More of the Same" (which has a fast double bass drum bubbling beneath the surface), and "The Rift" are strong songs which are powered by propulsive, churning riffs. Likewise, the album opening tune, "Come Back Alive," is fast, with a steam rolling main riff; "As It Is" is a catchy chugger with humming bass notes and some fine drumming by Igor; and, lastly, "Leech" is an explosive thrasher.
Ultimately, like all albums with Derrick (Green), "Roorback" isn't a bad album--it's just not a great one and not essential for anybody who isn't a Sepultura diehard.
