So long, Cavaleras
As impressive a drummer as Igor may have been (and he was), Jean Dollabella's style is far more impressive. I think this is the ultimate proof that Andreas Kisser was/is the only relevant mind in Sepultura. The haunting, downtempo polyrhythm from the first part of Sadistic Values is token enough of what he's capable of. A-Lex is just one fun ride of an album. The boys continue to evolve while Igor and Max are still stuck on their post pubescent angry hardcore-ish vibe. .

Quick and to the point: Great Album!
If you are still moaning because Max left Sepultura, you are losing some great thrash metal music here. Ok, so this is going to be quick. Sepultura is back to their thrash roots on this. Derek is a singing his gutts out, and Jean is a hell of a monster drummer. You will almost forget about Igor.

So, if you are a metal head, do yourself a favor and buy this album.

Shocked
You will not find any of that on this album. I have not been impressed with any of Sepultura's output since the departure of Max Cavalera so I was shocked to find that I greatly enjoy this album! I never thought that Derrick Greene was a good replacement for Max and cringed at some of his lyrics (Sepulnation? WTF?). While Derrick will never be a replacement for Max, he holds his own quite well here. The music actually sounds like vintage Sepultura and Derrick's vocals have improved alot. It is even more shocking that this album is good when you consider that it features neither of the Cavalera brothers! There is finally a new Sepultura album that I can stand listening to without the sudden urge to turn it off and put in Chaos AD or Arise! .

Fantastic New Conceptual Art From Sepultura

Continuing admirably in this new direction, "A-Lex" is an excellent conceptual work based on another classic piece of literature, Anthony Burgess' "A Clockwork Orange". After a string of so-so releases from one of the best and most influential death metal bands ever; Brazilian thrash-masters Sepultura revamped their sound and creative process, fine-tuned the production, and dropped "Dante XXIII"; an amazing concept album based on Dante Aligheri's "Inferno". From the artwork, to the music, to the production, this new direction is perfect for the band, and seems to have fired up the creative juices of the whole band-it's all here; crushing, heavy and dissonant riffing, ominous, bizarre atmospherics, and all. . . plus the storyline provides a great framework for the band's typical themes of social control and rebellion. The album ends on a clever and inventive note, with a mash-up of Beethoven and grinding riffs. . . .

One of the most satisfying recent metal releases in years, especially from one of the "old-school" progenitors of the genre. Recommended.
