Keep listening... it grows on you! Orange Ave, actually, has become better with age, and maybe I should be trying Dis/Location again, as I wasn't too fond of it two years ago. For context, my fave 7M3 albums are Rock Crown (by a mile) and American Standard and Economy of Sound. OK. . . my take on D&ND is a mixture of Rock Crown and Economy of Sound. The song writing is as heartbreaking as it gets -- just pay attention to Break the Spell or Last Kiss. The songs are imbued with some power pop elements, especially on the first few tracks, but this is a VERY GOOD thing. 7M3 works magic with this album! My first impression, a few months ago, was that it was a tired rehashing of some of their old themes. But, man, I just keep listening to it. Break the Spell, Strangely at Home Here, Last Kiss, Dreaming Against Me, You Think Too Much, Laughing Out Loud, There Was a Ghost, She Wants Results, Upside Down. . . these just become more and more catchy and addictive with every listen. BUY THIS CD. KEEP this CD. You'll like it, maybe love it now. . . but you'll love it for sure down the road. .
Best yet
I agree with some of the other reviewers, there's nothing wrong with "mature". I personally think this is their best yet. Keep up the good work!.
Old School Band Finds New Life
While their last album, "Dis/Location" was a return to a heavier sound, it also ended up being my least favorite of the band's career. I've been a fan of 7 Mary 3 since the beginning, and have eagerly awaited each new album. While great for in concerts, I didn't enjoy that CD as much as their others.
"Day & Nightdriving" was something entirely different, and from the first track I was instantly hooked on this album. The sound is softer than it's been since probably "Rock Crown," but the songs feel more introspective and very catchy. The best tracks are probably "Last Kiss" and "Hammer & a stone," but every track on the album is a great listen. Some critics of the album call it boring, and if your only experience of the band is "Cumbersome" you won't be getting any of that here. While that's a nice track, it's been overplayed ad nauseum. For an album of tracks that hold up much better after many repeated listening, this is the band's best album.
Best 7M3 album yet!
I may be a little biased here, having been a fan throughout, but I think if you like the band already then you will definitely like this album. I have been a fan of seven mary three since they first hit it big and this many years later they have put out an amazing cd which in my opinion is better than any other (but maybe not by much). I think anyone else would have a hard time being critical of it. .
Incredibly boring
"Was a Ghost" has a few memorable guitar runs that chime in from time to time. The Good
A steady guitar strum sets the pace on the verses of "Last Kiss," but the distortion and emotion picks up on the choruses. "Dreaming Against Me" has a country feel with it's slide guitar and acoustic groove. "She Wants Results" is a pure drum track that is highlighted by soulful vocals.
The Bad
I know that a band's current material shouldn't be judged on their past efforts, but does anyone remember anything by Seven Mary Three besides "Cumbersome?" 10 years or so later the band has decided not to change with the times and rely on a sound that has been long forgotten. All the songs sound the same with the exception of a different drumming pattern.
The Verdict
Day and Night Driving is incredibly boring. This twelve song collection is void of any energy. "Cumbersome" was a killer song when it debuted and it still plays on the radio today, but nothing on this album sounds even remotely close to that song. Seven Mary Three sound like a band going through the motions very slowly. Day and Night Driving should come with a warning: do not listen to while driving, day or night; will cause drowsiness.
