sigus ros another brilliant recording. they never cease to amaze me. now if only they would play here again, their live performances are outstanding both visually and sonically.
Not horrible, but very disappointing for Sigur Ros
I've been listening to Sigur Ros since Agaetis Byrjun came out, and they quickly became my favorite band by quite a large margin. To me, this album was beyond disappointing. I realize that all bands evolve. Their evolution up through Takk was so perfect and so incredible - I thought that this album couldn't possibly be bad. Then I listened through it.
The fact is, Sigur Ros has always been the most emotion evoking band I've ever heard. They are THE authority at painting in the mind with incredible soundscapes. I feel that they completely lost that in this album. To be honest, I was shocked. I have no idea how they went from Takk to this. These songs hardly stir anything inside of me.
I'm hoping that this was just a tangent they went on, and they will be back to the Sigur Ros I know and love for their next album. If not, well then it will be a sad day, but at least I have 4 other amazing albums of their music to listen to.
Yes
If you like this group I suggest you to buy something of Mum. With Von and () for sure the 3 best albums of Sigur Ros. .
With a buzzing in our hearts, we fly...
As this album is a departure from the modus operandi of the band's past work, ie, completely made in Iceland, more esoteric melodies instead of pop-ier work, and no english lyrics, some have called it a commecialization. It seams to me that there is a bit of a controversy with this album. I, however feel that it is not such, but an evolution. Med Sud I Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust is an album full of joy. Not pop music "dance-and-ignore-reality" joy, but a deeply intellectual & heartfelt joy that can only be expessed by those that believe in hope. It is at the opposite end of the musical universe from albums like Sunn O)))'s Black1, but it is how it should be. If we look only at the light, we will not be able to stand when the darkness comes, and if we only look into the void, we will forget that the light exists. This album is a great beacon of musical light, so I say to old and new fans of Sigur Ros alike, come, for a sonic feast awaits! Turn off the lights, get comfortable on your bed, and let the waves of sound crash over you like a calm, refreshing sea. .
Solid Record, (Unintentionally) Hilarious Video. . .
Who among us can forget the lilting piano strains that signal the beginning of "Hoppipolla" or the explosion of sound that "Saeglopur" bursts into mid-stride?
If nothing else it's impossible to forget the titles. Since the late nineties, Sigur Ros have established themselves as the premier purveyors of delicate orchestral melodies ripe for feature film soundtrack inclusion. The band themselves are nearly as inscrutable as their music, particularly since the members are notably boorish in dealing with the press. Case in point: the disastrous 2007 NPR interview (which can still be seen online, replete with "director's commentary") during which the band is somewhat polite yet awfully reticent for radio.
One wonders why they even agreed to render the interview. Publicity? Contractual obligations? Free coffee at the studio? Granted, the majority of the questions are approaching inane, yet there's little question the band could have been more gracious. Instead they come off as bleary-eyed sedative addicts. Though, personally, I wouldn't have it any other way. It is so very droll to read the comments of the fans as they blindly defend their precious heroes and decry the career choice (among other things) of the interviewer.
But I digress.
It was with great fanfare that the band released the first single from this album on their website last year, titled "Gobbledigook". Yes, I spelled that correctly - "Gobbledigook". I really wish this review fell on April Fools Day, somehow that would make this whole write-up even more amusing. The album cover and music video of "Gobbledigook" are, wow, just wow. Sigur Ros has a grand tradition of gorgeous disc packaging and thoughtfully crafted video clips. So what majestic aesthetic are we presented with this time?
Naked people running and/or dancing. LOTS of naked people. Why? Because we all know naked bodies equal poetic art. By this logic the AdultCon conventions should be worthy of highbrow review in the New Yorker. Were he still with us, I'm sure Helmut Newton would love this stuff. As for me, I'm simply pleased to behold a group so wonderfully bizarre they defy explanation.
Thanks Sigur Ros, for providing beautifully eclectic music with a hearty serving of unintentional hilarity. What will you guys think of next?
Wait, don't tell me. I want to be surprised.
