Silverchair - The Best of Silverchair, Vol. 1 Audio CD

On its merrits Tomorrow is one of the most popular songs to ever come out of Australia, Pure Massacre was big EVERYWHERE as was Freak and Israels Son. On its own merrits this album is awesome. DO NOT COMPARE THIS BAND WITH NIRVANA. Daniel Johns and Co were just kids when they wrote half this stuff and half of the world is trying to compare them to Nirvana. THATS HOW TALENTED THIS BAND IS! Silverchair were discovered at 15 years old and released Frogstomp when they were 16 years old!So please, do us all a favour, dont compare a 16 year old Daniel Johns to a 30 year old Kurt Cobain, it isn't fair on either of them!If you MUST compare or compete them, then at least listen to the later Diorama, where a more mature Daniel (a mere 23!) might just find his songwriting ability would get the better of Kurt! :)So if ya gonna sit there and say "well they aren't as good as Nirvana", remember you are comparing Mr Cobain to a 15 year old kid. . . and admitting the kid aint doin a bad job!Daniel Johns' songwriting of a mature 30 years or so old is still 3 or so years away! THINK ABOUT IT.
Misnamed Album
It doesn't contain their best music, and are we to assume there will be more volumes? If so, I hope they aren't like this one. I don't know why this album is titled 'Silverchair, The Best Of, Volume 1'. I've heard the band wasn't even involved in the decision to release this album, and disapproved. Here is a track-by-track breakdown:
(1) Anthem for the Year 2000 - A single from their third album, Neon Ballroom.
(2) Freak - A single from their second album, Freak Show.
(3) Ana's Song (Open Fire) - A single from their third album, Neon Ballroom.
(4) Emotion Sickness - Never released as a single, as far as I know. A great song though, from Neon Ballroom.
(5) Israel's Son - A single from their first album, Frogstomp.
(6) Tomorrow - A single from their first album, Frogstomp.
(7) Cemetery - A single from their second album, Freak Show.
(8) The Door - A single from their second album, Freak Show.
(9) Miss You Love - A single from their third album, Neon Ballroom.
(10) Abuse Me - A single from their second album, Freak Show.
(11) Pure Massacre - A single from their first album, Frogstomp.
(12) Untitled - This song was on the soundtrack to the wretched movie Godzilla. Typical Silverchair, alternating between softer melodic parts and extremely heavy parts.
(13) New Race - A fast catchy punk song, and a cover from another band. Not on any of their albums. I like the chorus 'Yeah-eah, Ha! I'm gonna knock you out!'
(14) Trash - A track that was left off Neon Ballroom, probably because it is very similar to the song Spawn Again, with Daniel Johns screaming the whole song through. I like it though.
(15) Ana's Song (Open Fire) (Acoustic Remix) - Just an acoustic version of track #3.
(16) Madman - A different version than the track called Madman on Frogstomp. This one has vocals, which they apparently decided to do without on the album. A really cool song.
(17) Blind - One of the best songs I've heard by them, I can't believe this wasn't on one of their albums.
(18) Punk Song #2 - A fast punk song that was left off of Freak Show.
(19) Wasted/Fix Me - These songs are originally by punk band Black Flag.
(20) Minor Threat - Yet another punk song, this song is by the band Minor Threat.
(21) Freak (Remix for us Rejects) - An interesting remix of the song Freak.
Overall, this is a good album for a Silverchair fan, but of course any fan already has the first 11 tracks at least. There is another album called Rarities which has the last ten tracks on it. I don't know why two different albums were made with these same tracks.
If this was really a 'Best Of' CD, then the rare tracks don't make sense to include, because most people haven't heard any of them before. This seems more like a release with their singles plus some rare stuff to lure fans to buy it. A weird combination. The song Emotion Sickness is the only exception, being a song that really is one of their best and it wasn't a single. An actual 'Best Of' CD, comprising tracks from their first three albums, would have to include more tracks that weren't released as singles but were really great (like Shade, Slave, and Petrol & Chlorine), and not the rare songs.
If you want to really hear Silverchair's best material, then get their latest album, Diorama.

Silverchair, Greatest Hits Vol. 1
Forget what everyone else thinks, this cd kicks ass. I wasn't a Silverchair fan until three years ago when I bought this cd. Best tracks would include all songs from Frogstomp and Neon Ballroom. I would give this cd 5 stars but some of the punk songs at the end were stupid. I HATE PUNK ROCK!!.
Some good songs but not worth the price...
Critics have called them a 'little nirvana', in some ways I can see this, but there are bands that try alot harder than this to copy nirvana's style. I am new to Silverchair, I had heard of them but I'd never heard any of their songs before. I wasn't that impressed with this album. Its not worth paying $21 (with shipping), that is just too much, even for a greatest hits album. Some of the tunes I enjoy increasingly like "Emotion Sickness", "Freak", and "Blind" <--- which was the song that made me buy this album. I was watching The Cable Guy one day and heard the song being played and I had to find out who it was by. I don't think that this band is amazing, but they don't suck. They have some talent at arranging good pop-rock songs. I might buy another one of their albums in the future, but for now this "Best of" c. d will have to grow on before that happens.
dawg
this cd rawx. . . my bro told me about these guys one day so i thought i would pick up this cd. i loved it! i like them better than nirvana now! .
