Young Modern . Nice album and it is always fun to have a DVD that shows great inside stuff about the band, videos, and the making of.
A Huge Disappointment...
Here you have 3 guys with a lot of talent (with several albums that show they know how to use it) and they throw it all away by trading their raw, melodic vocals for a whiny half-yodel, and a horrible mixing job that drowns out all guitar and bass. I recently had the displeasure of partaking in this "album" and I have to say: What a waste. What you have left is a miserable attempt at experimentation that ends up sounding like a prepubescent boy just learned his first chord at his piano lesson. There are actually several songs where the majority of what you'll hear is one piano chord (one and ONE ONLY) banging away in rhythm. That's it. Perhaps a better key/synth player is in order???
The lyrics and singing are also very, VERY boring. Not once, during the entire album, did I think "Hmm, that's an interesting piece of writing. " Daniel Johns' obviously tries to make his vocals inspired and epic. . . . ultimately they fall way short of the mark.
In summation: This album is NOT rock. Or pop. IMO it barely classifies as music with it's horrible structure and unending monotony. If you want an album that rocks, is epic, has great vocals, and knows exactly how to use an orchestral/keyboard arrangement to enhance the music. . . . buy Within Temptations "The Heart of Everything". . . . . . . . and leave YOUNG MODERN where it belongs: the dustbin.
The Dissilverchairs
This album was what I expected and sooo much more. With how much fun Daniel Johns had with The Dissociatives, and with the addition of Paul Mac to Silverchair, I definitely had a feel as to where Young Modern was headed (a highly anticipated sound in my eyes, I love the Dissociatives). What a treat. The band has once again taken another smooth musical turn.
Original/creatively weird to say the least, there are so many sounds stylishly fused together -this album is musically brave in such a positive way. I was happy to hear that they kept the orchestration and arrangements (Van Dyke Parks) and added electronic sounds on top (Paul Mac). Those don't even make up for half of the pleasant surprises on this record.
Once Diorama was finished, I really thought the band was going to have a difficult time making a more exciting follow up record. Well, they did it!! The world needs more fearless artists like Silverchair!.
Good for them, something different, but far cry from past
Diorama was a peak of potential, but this is by far the most comercial and polished I have ever heard this band. This is a good album on it's own, but almost soft rock/easy listening compared to first three albums. They don't have their angry young feeling anymore, and are hunkered down on just playing moderate rock and roll. It is almost as far of a departure as what Megadeth did with Risk, but I think silverchair pulled this off with a milder transition.
This has a lot of synths on it, along with no real hard rock edge. Straight lines and Strange behavior are two better tracks, but this is still and album that i'm going to have to grow used to. Overall it is worthy of the four stars, because this album is just solid songs all the way through. These boys are growing up, but I hope they don't forget their roots.

The most waited album
I'm a big fan of silverchair from 1995, when watchin' a music tv channel (TmZ music I Think) look tomorrow's video directed by a cool director (Mark Pellintong) and looking 3 kids who had my same age I thought "this is an incredible band" and started to find this CD to buy it. After a long 5 years of desperate waiting to recive a new material from the best band in australia (I think around the world), Young Modern arrive with a quality sound.
Since this moment to early days I have more than 25 disc including singles, especials, dvds and their 5 releases.
Young modern is a master piece who everybody have to buy. I bought the australian especial edition, it include a bonus DVD that show a documental with the making of Young Modern and the first single video Straigh Lines.
