The Pretty Pumpkins
You have the snarling, heavy Smashing Pumpkins that operate on one side of the alt-rock spectrum, and the soft, super-sensitive "Pretty" Pumpkins who operate on the other. The Smashing Pumpkins are like two bands in one. This EP is the Pretty Pumpkins sprinkled with hipster dust. The arrangemnts are minimalistic (except maybe for the title track), the melodies sweet, and the lyrics yearning. My personal favorite is "Cherry".
I like EPs. Something about the compactness and focus just charms me to no end. Also, the simple truth is that with less songs, there are less duds (with good bands, at least). Consequently, there are no duds on this EP. That's why it gets five stars.

Essential Pumpkins purchase
It has the classic "1979" plus five cuts that didn't make it onto Mellon Collie. The 1979 EP was originally part of the Aeroplane Flies High box set, but if you're lucky enough to find it sold separately, go ahead and buy it. "Ugly," an ode to low self-esteem, has kind of a Cars sound to it, and it's one of the Pumpkins' most interesting tracks. "The Boy" and "Believe" are two poppier numbers written by James Iha ("Believe" is my favorite of the two). The last song, "Set the Ray to Jerry," is one of my favorite Pumpkins songs.

This CD is fun to listen to. It showcases the Pumpkins' alternative pop side very well. If you see this in a used CD bin, don't hesitate for a second to buy it.

One of the best singles ever
It really embodies their style, from Gish to MCIS. I've been a major Pumpkins fan for 8 years now, and I just have to say that this is one of the best collections of "B" sides out there. The 6th track, "Set the Ray to Jerry" is one of my absolute favorite Pumpkins songs, and "Cherry" is another one. If you like the Pumpkins, this is a must for your collection. =).

GREAT SONG
I was at the CD store one day after I had just heard the song and picked the tape up (there was no cd there). "1979" by The Smashing Pumpkins is just a great song. I then stuck it in,listened to it,and about a week later, went out and bought "Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness",which includes "1979","Tonight,Tonight",and the other great songs. This is a good single if you find it,but for a real Pumpkins experiece,I recomend "Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness".
