Raw, simple and great !!!!
This collection includes most of the tunes that you would want on a best of album. The Smithereens are one of the all time great three chord rock and roll bands whos music never goes out of style. The material still sounds very timely as great rock and roll like this never goes out of style. If I were lost on a desert island, give me my T-Rex, Stones, Bazooka Jones and top it off with this record. . . . simply great! .

Smithereens-Simply a GREAT BAND!!!!
I don't even have to buy this particular "Best Of. I started listening to the Smithereens back in '89 when "Green Thoughts" came out. . . " CD, and I already know it's great. The songs on it are staples for the band, and it's a shame they didn't get much radio play back in the 80's and 90's. "Only A Memory" is my all-time favorite song from the group. . . I first heard it watching the song's video on MTV, and I haven't stopped loving the song since. If you're looking for a Smithereens album that personifies how good this band is, GET THIS CD!!!!! It's worth the investment.

Underrated Genius
Pat DiNizio is probably one the best lyricists you never heard of and his cohorts in The Smithereens have laboured in near obscurity for 2 decades. The simplicity of their music masks an underlying pop genius. While the band has managed a few minor hits, the biggest being the early 90's MTV staple "A Girl Like You", for the most part these fellows have been a college/cult sensation and that's a shame. Combining Beatlesque pop, crunching hard rock riffing and simple arrangements with the lovelorn navel-gazing lyrics of DiNizio, the result is musical heaven. "Best Of. . . " is a perfect starting place for the uninitiated, a handful of their best known tracks and early gems ("Strangers When We Met" is still a gorgeous opener) and the happy listener gets to experience the magic of one the most underappreciated rock bands in music history. A fine sampler of an even finer band.
