Oh Boy howdy...just what we need
Making a LIVE album so we Styx fans can hear Lawrence Gowan singing classic songs like Rockin the Paradise and Come Sail Away. What a slap in the face.
Sacrilege to butcher Dennis's beautiful songs like this.
Lawrence Gowan can't sing Styx. Maybe his own stuff is fine. . . . but Styx? DENNIS's songs? NO WAY.
Dennis has the best voice on the planet. STILL. . .
This live CD is a band's desperate attempt to get back at the one who gave Styx its signature sound. . . . for without Dennis, Styx is just some generic-sounding rock band. Blech.
A GREAT LIVE ALBUM!... (In spite of DeYoung's Absence).
It's a shame, but in spite of all, the live album is good and interesting: It has a good sound and the backup members like Todd Sucherman, Lawrence Gowan and Glen Burtnik reach to fill the empty musical spaces left by John Panozzo (RIP), Chuck Panozzo and Dennis Deyoung. I'd really like that Dennis Deyoung were still in the band. This live album is full of surprizes:
On the performance, James Young sang the track "Lorelei". The band played, since the release of the PICES OF EIGHT album, the never before played on tour song "Sing For The Day" (a must for the STYX fan). "Half Penny Two Penny" is another great track that didn't appear in the official released live discography of the band, as well as "Boat On The River", an acoustic song that was played only with Dennis DeYoung in the DVD RETURN TO PARADISE, or "Love Is The Ritual", a song by Glen Burtnik. Finally, the band played a little acoustic version of the Damn Yankees' song, "High Enough" (I wish they had played complete the song). So to resume, it's a great live album that makes the price worthwhile to pay and will let you asking for more. . . Goog Luck!.
Well...
"High Enough" is really good from Tommy Shaw's Damn Yanees collaberation with Ted Nugent and Jack Blades. The songs written originally by the members still in the band. I also like criminal mind by Lawrence Gowan. All the songs that are sung by the members of Styx are good. Like when Lawrence Gowan sings any of Dennis DeYoung's songs. They really aren't as good. But he does a decent job. But when James Young sings "Lorelei" that is just wrong. Lawrence Gowan is the only member aloud to sing Dennis DeYoung's songs. That is a fact. But it really could be worse.
WEH?!
It starts of with the terrible Rockin' The Paradise. This is bad. It is a great rocker, but Lawrence Gowan sings horrible on this song. Then you get High Enough, that is a good song. Lorelei sucks! The studio version is great, but James Young's version sucks. A Criminal Mind is a very good song, a song written by Gowan. He sings good here. Love Is The Ritual is next, the song is slower but also heavier then the studio version, not bad at all. Boat on The River is okay, nothing special. The next song is Half-penny Two-penny. The song is okay, not very different from the studio version. Then you get to hear Sing for the Day, they only play half of this song. I didn't like the studio version of this song, and this live version isn't better at all. Snowblind is good. Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough is kinda boring. Crystal Ball is very bad. The stanza is good, but the chorus is just terrible. I guess they miss Dennis DeYoung for the background vocals. Miss America starts good, but later in the song the guitar starts to play very softly, they should not have done that. Then you get the last song of this album: Come Sail Away without Dennis DeYoung. 'Gowan sings here again, and he just can't sing as good as Dennis. If Styx wants to make music without Dennis, okay. . . But they should not play Dennis songs live without Dennis!
I don't recommend this album to you. The only good Styx live album is Return To Paradise!.
"waiter! waiter! I have a request!"
hows about "Man In The Wilderness" live???
and throw in an extended version of "Lady" . .
while you're at it, throw in some "Castle Walls"
how 'bout it? I promise I won't whine that Dennis isn't singing them!.
