Underappreciated, difficult, yet amazing. Great album, solid songs, a year or so later I started picking up their other releases such as 40oz and Second Hand Smoke, etc. I have been a long time fan of Sublime, but I will admit I got hooked only after seeing the Santeria video on MTV (amazing, huh?) in the late 90's and then went back and bought their self-titled album. For some reason, this album passed me by. Well I picked it up randomly a few weeks ago, and I have got to say that while it is not as immediately accessible as their other albums, it truly does stand on its own. This feels a lot like a demo tape, lo-fi aesthetics throughout, with weird skits thrown in and no pretense of professional studio treatment. However, there are hooks buried here that really work, and it ends up feeling much more authentic than some of their other work. If you need a reason to get this album, go check out the song "Greatest Hits", it really epitomizes the feeling of this album. The song structure is not particularly tight, the timing feels off-kilter, they stop, they start, but somewhere around the 4th or 5th listen I realized this is one of the best songs I had heard in quite some time. If you feeling nostalgic for the drugged out crew from Long Beach, pick this up and you will not be disappointed.
Sublime Strikes Again, Good Tunes
I'd say the highlights of the songs on this CD are as follows: Greatest Hits, STP, Work that We Do, Boss DJ, All You Need, Freeway Time in LA County Jail, Mary, and that bonus hidden track with that awesome version of Don't Push. I'm saying this CD was great for the most part, but it's not the same as their other two albums that came out while Sublime was still all alive. There was a lot of filler on this CD, with many of the tracks containing no lyrics or minimal lyrics. There's one where they're just talking to music to some guy. Some of the non-lyrical tracks were good, though.
I would say that this is their weakest CD. It's still great, though. There are so many good songs on there. Just not as many as 40 oz. or Sublime's self-titled album. Even Second Hand Smoke beats it by a small margin. Of course, this is just my opinion. Definitely worth it for the songs I named above and maybe a couple more you might like. Give it a shot. It's definitely worth it.
The truth about this album
All of the interludes are basically inside jokes and that is why this album gets a bad wrap. This is a great album, but at the time it was made Bradley didn't know how many people would end up being Sublime fans. Still, the songs on it are just as good as 40 oz to Freedom (well, almost). I think if the interludes were cut, this album would be just as popular as 40 oz to Freedom or S/T.
Here are the best songs on the album:
-Steady B Loop Dub (Marshall did some pretty sick remixing so you gotta appreciate it)
-Steppin Razor
-Greatest Hits
-Saw Red
-Cisco Kid
-STP (my favorite on the album)
-Boss D. J.
-Mary
Great album, but DO NOT buy this as your first Sublime album, you won't like it! Buy 40 oz first!.
Great buying experience!
Everything arrived quickly, and was in great shape! I would definitely buy from them again!. I went on a little Sublime buying spree for the Mr.
honest about condition =}
When I received the cd it was infact factory wrapped and in perfect condition I was very happy. I was told the cd was in factory package but was weiry.
