Old is Good, But not Better I found them with the Beautiful Letdown and Oh! Gravity which are excellent, 5-star albums. Disclosure -- I am a big switchfoot fan. The lure of getting three more albums for one low price was definitely appealing. After listening to all of them many times I can say I am glad I purchased them but this isn't a 5-star purchase. The first album Legend of Chin could be left behind. Personally, I didn't get much from that. The second album New Way to be Human is the gem (as many others have suggested). Learning to Breathe is good but not great. So I am giving this 4 stars. If you want to spend slightly less (granted it is slightly since this is so well priced) then just get New Way to Be Human.
What an excellent beginning!
Eventually I began to realize that they had several other albums, and as I heard quite a bit of their newer material around on the internet, I began to realize how much I like and respect this band. For years, "The Beautiful Letdown" was the only Switchfoot album I knew, and I really enjoyed it. When I saw this collection for such a great price, I grabbed it, and I'm just ecstatic that I did. From the beginning, Switchfoot was an interesting, dynamic, creative band that defies strict categorization.
I've heard plenty of criticism that after The Beautiful Letdown Switchfoot "went secular. " Regardless of how you feel about that particular issue (I personally think it's a load of nonsense, as the songwriting of a band of faith will always be influenced and informed by and through its faith), there's no chance of getting a strictly secular impression from these early recordings. "You Already Take Me There," "New Way to Be Human," "Only Hope," "Home," etc. make it very clear that the band's faith is not only alive and well, but that it does influence and inform every area of their lives, including the songwriting.
This is a fantastic collection, full of great music that anyone can enjoy, Christian or not. It's multi-faceted and energetic, and seeing where Switchfoot came from is just as important as seeing where they've gone. .
Excellent
Great price for a lot of music. For people who have become Switchfoot fans recently, this collection is great to get you up to speed on all of Switchfoot's early music.
brilliant
the 1st album they sound pretty unpolished and 'soft' but it's still pretty good. these 3 albums are essential for anyone who considers themselves switchfoot fans
u can see the obvious progress from the 1st album to their 3rd and how they arrived at 'the beautiful letdown' which to me is their best album still.
the 3rd album is the best of all the 3 especially learning to breathe and obviously e 1st recording of 'dare u to move' which i think is as good as the newer version.
anyway all switchfoot fans buy this album! it's a steal considering the price and everything!
.
Switchfoot's best work?
Learning to Breathe is also great. Although I haven't listened to Switchfoot's two most recent albulms (Oh! Gravity and Nothing Is Sound) I consider New Way to Be Human their best up through Beautiful Letdown. If you don't have these albulms, by all means you should buy them at this price.
