Customer Reviews Deep southern grooves ). Great deep southern soul music, featuring the legendary Stax house band (Steve Cropper, Duck Dunn, et al. Taylor's smoky, soulful vocals are to the forefront, gliding smoothly over the cool grooves. No surprises, just sweet soul music. The track "Separation Line" is the high point for me. Great 1970's soul & funk This Stax album busts out with "Testify (I Wonna)", a hard-hitting funky tune that's right up there with anything released by James Brown or Otis Redding. How can I be the first person to review this album? And how is this man, one of the greatest soul singers that ever lived, still so under-rated and overlooked? Johnnie Taylor could flat-out sang! He was blessed with awesome pipes and bucketloads of soul. Another blazing, stanky funk favorite of mine is "It's Amazing". The album also features several slower r&b tunes that really allow Johnnie to show off his crooning skills. "Separation Line" is my favorite of the slower songs, but "Games People Play" is not far behind. Johnnie Taylor belongs in the pantheon of great black male soul singers, chilling with Al Green, Otis Redding, James Brown, Sam Cooke, Ted Hawkins, and a few select others. I'm tempted to give this 5 stars cause I dig it so much, but I'm trying to be stingier with my 5-star ratings and hand those out only to revolutionary albums. If you're a fan of old-school soul, funk, and r&b, then you should have at least a few Johnnie Taylor albums in your collection, and "The Philosophy Continues" is a fine one to start with. .
