Understanding
This is not just a typical album to be reviewed without a background story and cute opinions about lyrics and music. What so many are missing here is that TFF were formed on the basis of Primal Scream Therapy. Roland and Curt originally bonded over the commonality of difficult childhoods and the therapy that followed to assist in their healing. The music was their ultimate expression of their journey. They also had the talent and creativity to illustrate the emotions that accompanied their experiences. This isn't just a 'deep' and 'pretty' album. It is truly a masterpiece for those who understand what it really is and appreciate the music. For those who think that they need to explain every song of any album in these reviews, you need to save your interpretations for yourselves and allow each person to apply their own thoughts and ideas. Art is democratic.

Impressive and underrated.
This album is in no way dated, and the songs are as stronger as they were at the time the album was released, back in 1983. Sensational album!

All songs composed by Orzabal and amazing delivered vocals by both him and Smith. We have al kinds of moods, feelings and atmospheres. This is an anbum ahead of its time, definitely.

This is what I call pop music with heart. It's a problem for some people to understand what this may be, as nowadays pop music is garbage, with overproduced arrangements and empty produced celebs, like the kind of Justin Timberlake and etc. . .

If you think that Tears for Fears is only made of easy going pop bits you're totally wrong, listen to this album and its deep lyrics so you change completely your mind about this musical genius, that is called Roland Orzabal!.

Hurts so good
Coming through startlingly fresh still despite heavy doses of retro production and dated equipment, Hurting excels at taking the cold harsh textures of early electronica and fusing it with something far more melodically human. It is awfully hard to dismiss TFF's important debut amongst early electro-pop's greatest efforts. .

It's still as fresh as it was 26 years ago
This cd 'The Hurting' still remains one of my top 5 cd's of all time. Once in awhile I come in and write a review on a cd when inspired. I'm prompted to write this review because of Adam Lambert's brilliant rendition of Mad World tonight. I often don't write reviews on cd's from the past because. . . I figure anybody from 'my generation' wouldn't be interested. But here, a guy from a new generation is introducing his young audience to a song by Tears For Fears. There are probably many people tonight looking up this song and wondering 'what was that?'. I'll tell you what it was. . . 'Mad World', from the Hurting, one of the best cd's of all time really. TFF aren't one of my favorite bands but this disc stands out from a million. Lyrically and musically, the music captivates and transcends a person into a strange 'think mode'. I don't need to review it song by song because it's been done in other reviews and very accurately. Mad World, Watch Me Bleed, The Hurting, Start of the Breakdown, Memories Fade and Pale Shelter. . . . all 100% brilliant brilliant brilliant. So if the new generation doesn't think it's 'uncool' to invest some time and listening for the 80's, this is surely not one to miss. Songs From The Big Chair is also a good investment with brilliant songs. . . but it didn't all flow together nearly with the perfection that The Hurting did. Don't think twice. . . buy them both for the full effect.
