Classicq The year flew by: hair was different, dress was different, politics was different, EVERYTHING was different. By the end of 1967, Motown could never be the same. "All I Need" or "My Girl" was fantastic in 1964--really, among the few American sounds that gave the Beatles a run for their money. But now, as Sly said, there was a riot going on. Maybe more.
So, take the Motown dance sound, add Hedrix wha whas, thicken the drums, add eccho, and let the artists talk about what is really happening out there. No one did it better than the Tempations, and its all here for you on this CD.
Most know the songs: "Cloud Nine," "I can't get next to you,"; we all know the numbers, because AM radio was smart enough to play them. This is just masterful stuff. The production changed, but the Temptation's talent only grew stronger. Those voices were the perfect, heavenly chorus to imbue this new, rich, complex sound.
Listening now, this stuff works even more perfectly. Hearing it after years of absorbing and after hearing P-funk, Hendrix, and a thousand other bands, you reallize just how acidy, funky, hard and amazingly assembled this music was. It sounds as fresh now as it did in 1968, and has aged better than most top 40 music of the era.
Removed from its long ago context, it still dominates as soul, funk, acid rock, and works on so many musical levels that music lovers in 2068 will no doubt be dancing to, and learning from, this wonderful music, made all those turbulent years ago. .
The Temptations: Phase II (1968-1973)
During the late 60's much of the youth were "turning on," rioting in the streets, or marching against The Vietnam War. Like their contemporaries The Beatles, The Temptations went through a second phase in the careers. The Temptations, like fellow labelmate Marvin Gaye, jumped on the protest bandwagon and released hit after hit the spoke to the young or "the establishment" in an attempt to confront the issues of the day.
The songs on this compilation, all produced by the legendary Norman Whitfield, feature a group in transition, not just in personnel but in musical presentation. The lyrics are harder, the harmonies are tighter, and the songs themselves are extremely experimental, many of them foreshadowing the "extended cut" which would be so popular during the disco days of the late seventies.
There is no filler here. Each selection is a funky trek back in time when Motown ruled the airwaves. Of course any listener has his favorites but it would be unfair to single out some as better than others when the entire album is a piece de resistance.
Over two hours of Temptations. . . Now that's funky!.
motown getting psychedelic
oh yeah george clinton himself said that psychedelic shack was funkadelic material that he gave to whitfield. yeah this is the temps stuff I digf the hardcore funk stuiff not too hardcore norman whitfield influenced by hendrix, sly stone and funkadelic decided that tiomes were a changing and he changed the temps sound I ,love these songs psychedelic shack, cloud nine, take a stroll through your mind, runaway child running child, slave, message from a black man this is full of drug references and believe me getting high is recommended on these jams.
it's been proven that whgitfield would go to funkadelic gigs in the late 60's and record the band then have studio musicians copy the guitar riffs. as a matter of fact the guitar riffs on here sound similiar to the stuff p funk was doing at this timwe cherck out the parliaments i wanna testify. norman whitfield was a big p funk fan and he used eddie hazel, and billy bass nelson on his fututre projects. .
psychadelia and soul make for a powerful combination
You will recognize many of them, and will listen to them over and over again. A real classic, which doesnt get much airplay on the radio,Im guessing due to the length of many of the songs. A very talented group of musicians with a magical sound.
Long versions of the hits
Only regret is the Bass could have been deeper in the mix. Extended versions of Papa and others. Tiny and light on most songs.
