Ten Years After--Rock & Roll Music to the World Pop music critics have always preferred "A Space in Time," "Cricklewood Green," and "SSSH," but to my way of thinking, this far less frenetic outing by Alvin "Lightning Fingers" Lee contains his tastiest playing. Since the very first time I heard this album, way back when it was a new LP on the stands for the first time, it has been my favorite Ten Years After album. While the content of the songs is inspired by the blues, as in the persistent image of railroads as a means of escape and achieving freedom, the music is rock'n roll, cleanly played with power and finesse. The songs are all about escaping the strictures of conventional society and attaining personal freedom, as was Lee's "On the Road to Freedom," a joint effort with Mylon LaFevre. We see this quest in every song, with the possible exception of "ChooChoo Mama," which is just plain fun. Lee was and is a master technician--even at his fastest, each note is round and full, with a beginning, middle, and end, and each note is distinct--no slurring. Try it--you'll like it, They don't make'em like this anymore. .
One of the best ever
Pity it is not on more of their albums. Religion has to be one of the best songs ever put down by ten years after. Love the entire album, all top songs!.
It's About The Era!
A. Living thru this time of "music/culture" and seeing these guys more than once during that period, Alvin Lee and the band were one of the most entertaining, if not the best group, on tour at that time. E. 's playing is exceptional--but listen to Leo Lyon's bass!.
TYA
Still love Chick's understated organ on this disk, Ric's pounding and Leo's backbeat. Good playing on the speeding boogie blues that Alvin made his name on.
their last essential release
Thirty five years after it's release, Ten Years After has been reduced to litte more than a bunch of fast, loud guitar runs in many people's minds. «Rock & Roll Music to the World» was the last essential release of the british blues rockers. And there are memories of their stomping Woodstock performance. «Rock & Roll Music to the World» offers some blues, some ballads and of course the kind of simple rock an roll tunes Ten Years After always will be associated with: Choo Choo Mama, Tomorrow I'll Be Out of Town or the title track. Sure, this is the album of a band soon running out of steam. The strain of endless touring is beginning to tell. And sure, there's not much inspiration in Alvin Lee's guitar routines. But this is a suprisingly strong album. The band sounds tight and relaxed. Chick Churchill plays some interresting combination of synthesizer and organ lines. And there are even highlights like Standing at the Station or You Give Me Loving.
