Perfect TMBG...
It's very unassuming and of the same ilk as their debut, but it's a bit more diverse in songs and styles. Sure this was their new album when I came to know of them, but I picked this up a bit later on. It's a bit warmer and captures what TMBG were about at that time perfectly. "Purple Toupee", "Where Your Eyes Don't Go","Piece of Dirt", "Mr. Me", Ana Ng", "Pencil Rain", "Santa's Beard" and "They'll Need a Crane" are some of their best songs. As is the Lincoln outtake "Nightgown of the Sullen Moon".

.

Perhaps the best of their early releases
The best contained in "Lincoln" are on par, starting with "Ana Ng", right on through the obnoxious finale, "Kiss Me, Son of God". Many fans are in love with "Flood" because it contains multiple classics that show up in everyone's collections.

With all the earlier TMBG releases, you get songs that, even though they are short in duration, are certainly not lacking in development. There are no fillers here. "Ana Ng" demands immediate attention - you will remember the first time you heard this song. There are plenty of examples of their patented off-beat humor to choose from.

There are also flashes of some of the most innovative composition you will find in the rock medium. The John's are masters of making interesting and unique arrangements of whatever they put out, but take a moment and look at what's underneath. There are some brilliant melodies and musical ideas on this album.

If you are new to TMBG, you definitely want to start here.

A Good CD, but I recommend the Double Album instead.
Unless you already own their debut album or are a purist, I recommend buying that one instead and save yourself some money in the long run. TMBG (or perhaps I should say their Record Company) released a Then and Now Double CD that has this album wholesale on it combination with their first album.

Contradictory Opinion - looking a little deeper
While some may enjoy the music styles, they seem to not be paying much attention to the lyrics. I have to disagree with many of the reviews here, far from being their best album, this so far is my least favorite of TMBG's work. TMBG is notorious for their use of symbolism and metaphor to convey a deeper meaning, whether historical, political or social commentary, or whatever it may be. If you only listen to a TMBG album for the music, you're missing the brilliance of their artistry.

That having been said, this album seems to reveal something of the darker side of the group. The songs cover topics such as alcoholism and drug abuse, government control, combat, death and destruction, adultery, and blasphemy to name a few. Personally, I didn't care for the choice of material. I'm sure others will disagree with me, some will enjoy the subject matter. There's no doubt that the album is well crafted, with TMBG's usual crazy approach to serious topics, and there are even some songs I enjoy, but the darker overtone of this album just wasn't my style. This one's going back on the shelf, and I'll stick to the rest of the albums in my hefty stack of TMBG music.

People should get beat up for stating their beliefs.
If you are familiar with TMBG, you know what to expect. This was the second album by They Might Be Giants. Songs with catchy melodies and silly lyrics. There are a lot of great songs here. My personal favorites are "Ana Ng", "Santa's Beard" and "Shoehorn With Teeth". They Might Be Giants fans love this album, and rightly so.
