3EB's best album. Highly recommended. It is every bit as catchy and memorable as the debut, but with darker, deeper, and more personal songs. In my opinion, this album far exceeds 3EB's debut album in every way and is my favorite of all of their albums. The album is very melodic and flows together beautifully. I would say that it is an advantage that the album was not as big of a hit as the debut, as it can be listened to without sounding like a greatest hits album. This is the album I reach for most when I want to hear 3EB and still enjoy listening to it after having listened to it ever since it was released. I would highly recommend purchasing an import version of the album rather than the US release. Another reviewer mentioned there being an "indistinguishable edited version" of the album and a regular version of the album with two different track listings. This is incorrect. In the US, there is only one version of the album available, and it is an edited version. The song Slow Motion was made into an instrumental because the lyrics were deemed too violent and offensive in the wake of the Columbine High School massacre. There are two different versions with two different track listings, but this is because the first pressing contained a version of Slow Motion with only the chorus as track 11. The second pressing was released with all the lyrics removed and the song made into a completely instrumental piece that was moved to track 13. The latter is the only version currently available in the US. In other countries, however, the song was never censored and is available with all lyrics intact. Interestingly enough, the import version does incorrectly state "(instrumental)" next to Slow Motion in the liner notes(though not on the back cover). Anyway, Slow Motion is an amazing song and one of my all time favorites by 3EB. If you actually listen to the lyrics to the whole song and pay attention to the meaning, you will discover that it is actually an anti-violence/anti-drug song about how the media exploits both. If you can't find an import version, it is available uncensored on 3EB's greatest hits album here in the US. However, the album just doesn't sound as good or right with the censored version on it, so it is still recommended. Well, enough ranting. Buy the album. It's a great album regardless of which version you purchase.
Brings back memories
I thought this album was a little more pussy compared to the depute album. This CD is awesome, when i first bought it back in 99 i thought it sucked cause i liked the more punk rock stuff. Upon second I mean 884th listen this album is so awesome.
Poor Third Eye Blind
Then bam, out comes Blue, a sophisticated rock album that's not nearly as accessible or catchy but years more mature. Their poppy, mainstream debut album established them as the radio-friendly rockers with lyrics so catchy, even your Mom can't resist (innocently chiming "I took the hit that I was given then I bumped again" never ceases to amuse). Blue alienated casual pop fans expecting the first album redux and the band's "guilty pleasure" cachet made sure critics and other music lovers gave it a wide berth.
It's a shame, because as others have mentioned, Blue is among the most underrated rock albums of its time.
Blue and directionless
The production is still as spotless as it was on their debut; musically, they've fallen into the same pop/rock Venus fly trap that ensnares all but the best modern groups. I like the album, but that's because I'm a softy. "Ten Days Late" is fun ("Funny how you always cried out daddy," he says!) and there's a good line in "Camouflage" ("We walk along like a sequel/You're a cameo"), but it just isn't really good, particularly in comparison with their debut, which I thought was a knockout. Listening to "Blue," I bet they've never heard the Joni Mitchell album.
very good follow up
I didnt listen to this untill the beginning of 2008, and I have to say that is a very good sequal to their self-title 1997 debut. I really love this album. Their most catchy song is Never Let You Go. A song about being alone is Deep Inside Of You, Anything is the first single on the album, but for some reason it did not chart on the hot 100 and or even on the top 10 on the rock charts. 10 Days Late was the last single released, and this one did even worse than Anything. My personal favorite on this album is Darkness.
