What else were you expecting? But I see a lot of low reviews - even the occasional single star. Ursa Major deserves five (or more) stars - it's obvious, it's an extremely good, heartfelt work. Why?
Because these people, after a cursory listen, find themselves going "Hey, where's the super-duper-epic 'Doot doot doot, doot do-doot dooo' of days gone by?" And since more than half a decade has passed since we've heard from the 3EB, everybody's expecting them to eat coal and crap diamonds. But you know what they say about high expectations. . .
No, this isn't the best album of all time. I'm not even going to lie just to make my point and say it's the best 3EB's ever put out - I personally feel that honor belongs to the SORELY under-appreciated Out of the Vein. But because you think six years is long enough for Jenkins and company to write the next White Album, you trash it, going "Ahh no kazoo-ish guitars like on 'Never Let You Go', what a rip!" That's the wrong way to go about it.
What you have to do is go, "Okay. Let's hold Ursa Major up next to. . . oh, just about any other album that came out in the past six months. " And when you've done that, what do you come up with? Yeah, that white bear looks a lot better now, doesn't it?
I see no reason to go into detail on any of the songs - they're all really good, if not phenomenal. But don't dismiss just because you're overly nostalgic, or your balloon got popped. A few years from now, I bet you're going to hear a song off UM and go "Oh yeah. . . that was awesome. " And it won't matter which one.
Great album
I received this album about two months ago, and I listen to it daily. There are only two bands whose music I can listen to over and over again, and they would be 3eb and U2. The song I initially liked the most was Sharp Knife, but now I love Water Landing even more. I have put these songs on repeat for over an hour during a long trip in the car, as well as for short sprints at the gym. I am certain that I will grow to appreciate the rest of the album. I have been a 3eb fan for over 10 years now, and I am sure I will remain one.
Come on people
I judged the cd based on all their other cd's. I first, like a lot of people, sad wow this is what we waited for. well they have changed their sound slightly but they are still the 3eb i love. You cant really hear anything to different from what you would usually expect from 3eb. after further listening i cant take this cd out and just keep listening to it. its great i think their is to many wanna be music critics here. its a great cd and definitely worth 13 bucks. . . . . . and whoever gave this cd a 1 and a 2 are basically retards.
Requires a 2nd, 3rd and 4th listen
At the finish I thought there were only a couple songs I wanted to hear again and I wasn't even sure what they were. I'm a huge Third Eye Blind fan, but I have to say the first time through I was sadly disappointed. Immediately catchy hooks are uncharacteristically few and far between on this album, but please don't let that stop you from picking this one up. While it may not seem to be great music initially, the more I hear the more I feel these are great songs. All of them. Stephen has something to say on every tune - sometimes obviously in your face, and other times a bit deeper down. The music and lyrics become incredibly comfortable after multiple listens, to the point of lingering in my head much more than anything I've listened to recently. This is NOT a pop album and knowing that right off may shape your expectations and allow it to penetrate more quickly. If you like what makes Third Eye Blind unique, then grab this one and you won't be disappointed.
What happened!!!!
I've been a fan of TEB since their first album, I think the best one was out of the vein, was just waiting to hear new material, what a disappointment, I just cant believe such a crappy album, with no feelings no great lyrics and Stephan singing like ass, if you want to still like TEB please don't pay attention to this one, very sad.
