Poor Sound Quality You can barely hear the guitar track on "Mama Told Me" -- that problem alone made the whole purchase worthless for me. The collection itself isn't bad (missing just one hit), but the sound quality is unacceptably poor. This was one fun, playful rock band with jazz and soul influences. They were very popular in the late 60s early 70s, and the music is awesome for nostalgia (and for the occasional party). If you don't like pop, that's one thing, but assuming you already like the music, don't get this version.
A More Comprehensive Set of TDN's Super Hits
This collection includes most of their very popular hits from eight of their studio albums. This is another Greatest Hits album from the super group Three Dog Night, who released a string of pop radio hits from the late 1960s to the mid 1970s. These songs were listener favorites on the airwaves, and all of them have a sound characteristic of TDN, which cannot be described accurately in words, but simply have the essence which unmistakably belongs to this band.
There are 20 songs to be found on this album. From their first album, the self-titled "Three Dog Night", is the lonely song "One" and the romantic "Try A Little Tenderness". Three songs were derived from their second album, "Suitable For Framing": these include "Eli's Coming", a fast-paced, frantic sounding act; "Easy To Be Hard", a gentle piece originally found in the 60's soundtrack and Off-Broadway play "Hair"; and "Celebrate", a lively party song. Two tracks are extracted from their third studio album "It Ain't Easy". These include "Mama Told Me Not To Come"; and the laid-back "Out In The Country". Three hits come from their fourth album "Naturally": "Liar", about dishonestly in a relationship; the high-energy "One Man Band", and the super hit "Joy To The World", perhaps the group's biggest hit.
From the fifth studio album, "Harmony", comes the heartfelt "An Old Fashioned Love Song", the memory-laden traveling song "Never Been To Spain"; and "Family of Man", a description of modern conditions in the early 1970s (this song could be relevant today, over 35 years later). Out of their sixth studio album "Seven Separate Fools", comes a prosocial song "Black And White", about racial harmony; and the tender-sounding "Pieces of April". Two hits are taken from their seventh studio album, "Cyan". These are the joyous "Shambala", and the piano-driven romantic "Let Me Serenade You". Three hits march out of their last great studio album "Hard Labor": "The Show Must Go On", a track which begins and ends with the familiar circus theme; "sure As I'm Sitting Here", another piano-driven hit; and "Play Something Sweet (Brickyard Blues)".
These wonderful songs, with astounding creativity, clever artistry and staggering popularity, make up an outstanding collection which deserve seven stars out of five on the five-point scale here. It would have been great if this band had continued producing hits and albums beyond the mid 1970s, for they would likely have been just as good. .
great songs- bad sound
_Perhaps no good master tapes exsist? the reviews iVE READ FOR THE JOY TO THE WORLD ANATHOLOGY SAID THE SAME THING- BUT THAT ONE LEAVES OFF MAMA told me not to come. I really wanted to hear these songs with great or even really good fidelity- but alas it sounds slightly better then the one speaker phonograph I had as a teenageer- I still enjoyed it after a few songs got used to the bad sound (compared to most any other cd I have) but was disappointed it didnt sound as good as contemporaries such as the BREAD anthoogy which has great sound.
back to the 80's
I bought many lps of the band but neglected to have alot of these songs on them. takes me back to my teen years, all the popular songs, well most of them are on this cd. Makes it easy to pop this in the car, can't do that with a lp.
CD Three Dog Night
