Classic
And I would be wrong. I would propose Rubberneck, the Toadies album before this, would be impossible to top.

Hell Below Stars Above showcases the riff-twist southern rock Rubberneck does. It also packs the midnight tar pit anger and revenge odes that made Rubberneck such a wonderfully, nakedly uncomfortable listen. This album will creep you as much if not more.

But the Toadies here have improved here subtlely. The songs are longer, and segue better around their unexpected cornors. The choppy rhythms here are as inventive as ever, but more punchy and ressonent. The production on Hell Below adds a thickness that tops Rubberneck's.

Production also helps this album beat its pappy because it is more complex, but in the most subtle of ways: the singers vioce flanges for a word or two at just the right point-"did I just hear that?" Guitars grind and suddenly drop into the back of the mix, then pop forward again. A coda comes when least expected.

This band is good. REAL good. If you can't see why, you are just not listening. .

incredible...
Every song contains elements of striving passion and rock ferocity. Easily one of the most underrated albums ever. A must have for any rock fan.

Great follow up
I was real curious to hear this album and this one I thought was also very excellent. Well I liked Rubberneck so much and decided to buy a ticket to see their second night at Stubb's here in Austin whihc was last night. Maybe even better then Rubberneck. The album starts off with tradition Toadies guitar riff and goes right into a blast of rocdk with Plane Crash. It keeps rocking from there. Other favorites include Little Sin which is another energeting rocker. My personal favorite would probably be Motivational which is full of energy. Not much else I can say about this album but out of the first two this is probably my favorite album. My advice if you don't have this album get it but as I know alot of Toadies fans are obesesed and own everything. As far as the concert went last night it was ok but didn't care too much for the new stuff they were playing from No Deliverence. .

It's not close to Rubberneck....
The lead vocals are lacking on this album, and most compose of extremely repetitive chorus' but the album is still good, it's just no where as good as Rubberneck.

Return From the Water
SWEET!!! The Toadies rock, no doubt about it. Hadn't listened to the Toadies in years, then stumbled upon this album. This ain't "Rubberneck", but it's suprisingly good. The Toadies retain their trademark sound, and have put out a good album here.

"Push the Hand", "Heel", "You'll Come Down", all classic Toadies style. Forgot how funky their bass can be. Great find here, so happy I picked it up.
