Excellent It was this album (together with Green Day's Dookie) that started to change my mind. This is the first Die Toten Hosen album I ever met with, back when I was just listening to Depeche Mode, thinking that punk was a mere amusing heap of noise.
The work is consistent throughout, powerful, and fresh, and is always well-focused. The rythm varies from song to song, so it can be heard in just one session without getting bored, and it has both cheerful (e. g. , Love is Here) and gloomy songs (e. g. , Perfect Criminal, which calls to mind the script of Stallone-Snipe's Demolition Man), and many classics.
However, some of the magic of the Hosen is lost when they sing in English, so I should say Opium Furs Volk is a must if you want to know what these guys can really pull off.
Good solid German punk turned English
For three years now, I've been listening to three of their German albums (Opium Fuers Volk, Damenwahl, and Kauf Mich!), and really enjoy their music. I first came across Die Toten Hosen studying my fourth year of German in high school, and after hearing "Mensch" and "Zehn Kleine Jaegermeister," I was hooked. I was a bit skeptical about buying them in English translation, but I must say the songs stay very true to the originals and the album is fantastic. Although it took a bit of getting used to for me to not hear their voices singing in German (as I know the original versions of many of the songs included), this album is just sensational and hasn't left my side in teh week since I've pruchased it.
This album is, in short, simply great.
Achtung!
They've translated they're German songs into english (except Wunsch Dir Was) and they sound great. I first came across this group when a friend of mine bought "Learning English" I stumbled across this CD years later and was blown away by the quality. If you like heavy Punk music, this is the album for you.
