A Hard-Edged, Rockin' Album Three very talented musicians, great songwriting, and solid guitar work makes this one of the best "Rock-&-Roll" albums to come out of the early 80's. This was such a great effort by a great group! Released in 1981, when on one side you had the last remaing dregs of disco hanging on, and on the other the hard-core, not so talented Punk groups pounding your brain into submission, Triumph's "Allied Forces" hit's the air waves and just knocks your socks off. I originally owned this on vinyl and then purchased it when it was released on CD. I still can not get enough of this album.
One of the things that made this effort so great is it had more than one type of music that helped it's popularity cross lines of interest. You had the rock anthems in "Fight the Good Fight" & "Ordinary Man" (one of my all-time favorites songs). You had the top 40 hit in "Magic Power. " You had the solid rock in "Allied Forces" & "Fool for Your Love. " And then you had the bizarre yet interesting sound of "Air Raid. " You can keep playing this year-after-year and I promise, you will never get tired of it.
I would highly recommend this to any guitar-driven rock fan. Even though it's 27 years old it still sounds fresh!.
Classic guitar
Got hooked on Triumph when their videos first appeared on MTV. . . ages ago. Still recommend this album as their best!! For the weak-in-the-knees girls and those who want to share with these girls, I highly recommend "Say Goodbye". I'll be on my way.
An incredible album by an amazing band!
Rik Emmit was such a powerful rock player but had a real feel for more classical and acoustic playing. I can't decide if Allied Forces or Thunder Seven are my favorite Triumph records, but I do know that after hearing Magic Power, I was hooked and still am 20 years later. Mike Levine was a very solid bassist and Gil Moore not only was a great drummer but a really good singer. I saw them in 1986 in Philly and they were just amazing, one of the best shows I've ever seen. Every song on this record is great, Allied Forces, Magic Power, Ordinary Man, Hot time, and the anthem Fight the Good Fight rock with a passion that was missing from most of the hair metal rubbish of the early 1980's. This band had real talent and wrote intelligent, thoughtful hard rock songs, period. If you're feeling down put on Magic Power or Fight the Good Fight and I guarantee you'll feel a whole lot better. So turn it on and turn it up. I've got the magic power of the music in me. Rock on Gil, Rik and Mike, wherever you are. .
Rik Emmett is legendary.
I saw Triumph in concert a few times, I remember once Yngwie Malmsteen opened up the show to promote 'Marching Out'(excellent album)What a concert that was!! I also remember when Deep Purple opened for Triumph! Make no mistake, Triumph has had it's share of success. One of Rik's strongest influences is Doc Watson, a legendary fingerpicking master. This album here is is a great example why. I used to know every single song from every album. . and I've never done that with any other band ever. .
This is THE Definitive Heavy Metal Album, bar none!
Granted, Metallica is hard, but this album is just the perfect blend of everything that makes a hard rock/heavy metal album. This is my absolute favorite album of all time! Some say that Metallica's "One" is THE heavy metal album. When I listen to the album, and I do frequently, this is how I do it. I skip song one-Fool For your love. It's the extraneous song here. I move right on to Magic Power. I visualize the stressed out girl the song is about, and her special relationship with the radio DJ who makes her day and lifts her soul with his music. Now, it's time to step down to the get down. Allied Forces reproduces the sound effects of a real air raid ingeniously with guitars, a synthesizer, and drums. After the air raid, the guitars smash into the song. During a musical bridge, the synthesizer backs the guitar sound in an awesome way. Now, our blood is pumping, and Hot Time (in the city) tears it up with a pounding beat backed up with incredible guitar work. We need a breather now and Fight the Good Fight does that with a christian plea to do the right things. This song earned the album and group the endorsement of the Bible Foundation in a day when there was no Christian rock groups, but triumph had planted the seeds with this song. Next, we move on to Ordinary Man, which starts with great accapella voice only harmony. Then the guitar slowly starts. A plea for the common man builds to a thundering crescendo before the song starts a slow wind down. We are definitely floating on cloud 9. Petite Etude is a short, smart, guitar solo. Finally, the album ends with Say Goodbye, which is a goodbye to those who mistreated us in relationships, but we're smart and strong enough to move on without them-Who needs them anyway? It's also a clever way to close the album and works great as a concert ender. So there you have it, a ballad, several rockers, a call to arms, and a goodbye. A fantastic album and definitely at the top of my list as the one album I would take with me to a desert isle.
