Conway's Final Touches
Today would have been Conway's 76th birthday. It's hard to believe that this album was released 16 years ago. This particular album was in the works during the last part of 1992 and into early 1993. There was no official title for the album during Conway's lifetime. It's been reported that Conway suggested "An Old Memory Like Me" or "Final Touches" as the album's title but MCA executives thought that those titles were too negative, making it sound like Conway's career was over.

After Conway passed away on June 5, 1993 it was announced that the album that he had finished earlier in the year would be called FINAL TOUCHES. In the version that I have it features liner notes from writer, Robert K Oerman, giving a tribute to Conway and his impact on country music. The album's producer was Don Cook while Conway and his wife, Dee, were billed as "associate producers".

The songs reflect the sounds in country music during the early '90s in the aftermath of Garth Brooks when country pretty much sounded like 1970's rock music with a lot of rock-oriented instrumentation. Conway included three rocked-up, rowdy songs on this album. "Two Timin' Two Stepper" and "You Oughta Try It Sometime" were two dance songs. The line dance craze in country music was happening at the time. . . fueled by Billy Ray Cyrus and "Achy Breaky Heart". The third rowdy song on FINAL TOUCHES is "Don't It Make You Lonely?".

The rest of the material is the standard Conway Twitty. . . love songs about love gone good, love gone bad, and love that was never to be. "The Likes of Me" fits the latter category. In that song Conway sings of wanting a relationship with a woman whose not had a run of good luck with other guys. "I Don't Love You" is a song about a couple and the woman simply doesn't love the man. The arrangement is rocked-up as well. . . but not in the same style as the others I mentioned.

"I Hurt For You" is in the aching for love category while "You Are To Me" is about a senior couple. "I'm The Only Thing I'll Hold Against You" is a lover's plea of better things to come. . . the woman in the song has left the man but she comes back the next day saying she's made a mistake and wants to try again.

All in all it's a great Conway Twitty album and one that shows that no matter the instrumentation around him, his voice carries the songs he sings. . . rarely did Conway ever completely rely on a bouncy melody to sell a song.


What a legacy!
It's a great legacy for the star, showing that even towards the end of his life, he still had what it takes to be a legend! A MUST for any country music fan!. This album was recorded shortly before Conway's sudden death, and was released shortly thereafter.
