My Introduction To U2 & A Glimpse Into What They Would Become!!

They we're hungry, they had something to say, and they were hellbent on saying it!
This is U2's 3rd masterpiece in my opinion. The phrase "echoes of things to come" comes to mind when I hear this album now,
but back in 1983 when I first heard it, I thought it was the most passionate,
urgent statement that I'd ever heard in modern rock up to that point!
Coming out of Ireland, U2 had a sound and a message that nobody else was even
thinking about at that time! "Sunday Bloody Sunday" went through me like a
laser beam and I was enthralled by Bono's almost crying delivery!
There are 5 other songs on here in addition to "SBS" that rocked my world too,
so I would say that this is U2's really first complete artistic statement as well. . . "Joshua Tree" is #1, "Achtung Baby" is #2,
then comes this one for my money!--The remastering sounds good and brings it back to life!.

WAR Remastered
The remastered disc does sound better than the original, this record was also one of U2's best records, where things really started to come together musically.

U2's First Great Album
The reason this one gets such a high mark is that there are two absolutely classic cuts ("Sunday Bloody Sunday", "New Year's Day") as well as at least four great album cuts ("Seconds," "Like A Song. U2
War; 1983
Island Records

My Rating: 9/10

U2's first great album, WAR began the long u2 tradition of writing five or six mind-numbingly great songs and adding in a few stinkers to round it out. . . ," "Drowning Man," "Two Hearts Beat As One"). Still, the album as a whole undoubtedly lives up to its name. From the stark production to the explosive drums to the barbed-wire guitar, U2 and Steve Lillywhite crafted a masterfully anthemic group of tracks, all rounded out by Bono's Celtic war-cry. However, WAR's longevity is owing far more to its underlying spiritual themes than any political trappings. When Bono declares "I won't wear it on my sleeve!" he ties together punk and Christian sensibilities, forging a way ahead for an entirely new breed of rock and roll. It's true - back then, no one else was writing music like this. No wonder U2 became the biggest rock band in the world.

Great songs, lousy cd pressing.
"Sunday, Bloody Sunday", "New Year's Day", "Two Hearts Beat as One" and others on this are outstanding. This cd is a classic for it's songs.

However, Comparing the sound quality between say Vinyl Special Edition LPs and this cd is apples and oranges. It is heavy with that annoying CD brightness.

songs a 10, sound not worth it. I once owned a 45 LP of A:"Sunday, Bloody Sunday", and B:"New Year's Day" english only pressing. That was fantastic. .

One of U2's best
Almost every song is great and 3 were hit singles, including Sunday, Bloody Sunday, New Year's Day and Two Hearts. This is one of U2's best albums. New Year's Day has become a radio staple classic and is still fresh 20-something years later. I bought this cd for the remastering and I wasn't disappointed, the remastering is excellent. I would rank U2s albums in the following order.

Achtung Baby
All That You Can't Leave Behind
No Line On The Horizon
How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb
The Joshua Tree
Pop
War
The Unforgettable Fire

If I didn't list it then I didn't care for it much. I'm talking to you Zooropa, October, Rattle & Hum and Boy. Those albums all have their respective moments but I wouldn't recommend them to anyone but hardcore fans.

For those of you that have never listened to War, you are in for a pleasant surprise. It was one of their most MOR(Middle of the Road) albums and it features their trademark anti-war protest lyrics. Very accessible, original music. One of the classic cd's of the 80's New Wave movement and a huge influence on other bands at the time.
