Not Much Good
Prior to that as a four piece the music was very different to that which followed despite three of the founder members still incumbent in today's line up. UFO as they are famously renowned didn't get started until the "Phenomenon" album in 1974. Call it space rock, ahead of it's time, psychedelic acid rock, heavy blues/early metal, 60's to 70's transition, call it whatever you like, it isn't any good.

So I tried to entertain them.....
That being said, this album stinks. First off I would like to say that UFO is one of my alltime favorite bands, Schenker or not ('You Are Here' is a strong return to form). Not ready for prime time would be an understatement. This album is not ahead of its time, it is behind the times and using styles that the legendary originators of hard rock had already dumped or blew away. Sabbath, Zeppelin and Purple were miles ahead of UFO by late 1970! Another thing, although his technical defficiencies were not as glaring as they would be on 'Flying', Mick Bolton has to be the worst lead guitarist in the history of metal. The guitar sound is loud and maybe decent in some places but God, this man can't play a solo to save his life! Pathetic! Two stars because again, this is one of my all time favorite rock acts, true legends, and this album blows! Highlights???!!! Well, I've always liked "Follow You Home", I know the riff is a Kinks ripoff but the rhythm is pretty cool (guitar solo sucks in this one too. ) Can't say much about the rest ("Who Do You Love"?? Are you kidding me. . . . zzzzzzzzzzzzz). "Treacle People" is interesting, Bolton actually plays descently here. Mogg and Way had a long way to go as songwriters and hard rock masters, thank goodness they didn't give up. Hit only in Germany and Japan? Go figure. At least its better than 'Flying' but that's a story for another day. UFO historians check it out to see how far they had to come, others be ascared! The average rating(**** from Amazon reviewers!!??) on this album kills me, are these people alright??? Hopefully I scared some people straight! .

UFO's First Step
The guitar tone is exceptionally excellent in that there is wah-wah, old fuzz-tone distortion and some not so great phase shift (not a band error, but an engineering error). When you listen to these first songs by UFO, you will immediately hear a mixture of 60's Psychedelia/Acid Rock mixed with Heavy Blues/Early Metal. Get this release if you want to hear the transition of Rock from the late 60's into the early 70's. .
