Space Rock Begins An album is a collection of songs that fit together in a fashion of flow that makes for an overall enjoyable musical experience. Some CDs are a collection of songs and some CDs are albums. This is one such album. In their previous work, UFO billed themselves as a Space Rock band, which apparently meant a combination of Rock and Blues. While maintaining that genre, the band moved the needle a little more to the Rock side on Phenomenon with their new guitarist, Michael Schenker. "Doctor, Doctor" was the single from this album, but their cover of Willie Dixon's blues classic "Built For Comfort" can be felt in your soul. Phil Mogg's vocals and Schenker's unique guitar stylings would be the driving force behind several incredibly well produced albums into the new millennium! .
Wrong Track Names
Great great album. The track labelled "Oh My" is really "Too Young To Know" and the track labelled "Too Young To Know" is really "Oh My".
overlooked gem from the 70's
Get it- and don't judge it by the hairband nonsense of the decade that followed it. The most overlooked and underrated album from the 70's- hopefully that changes with the information age. .
Is There a Better Guitarist than Schenker?
I thought the band was tight and I dug a little deeper and I am glad I did! "Phenomenon" is one awsome audio display on guitar star Michael Schenkers love and ownership of 6 electrified strings. I got turned on to UFO by the radio friendly "Too Hot to Handle" and seeing a different version of the band open for Ozzy way back in '82 (Randy Rhoades last tour if anyone remembers!).
I've got two faves here, and they are probably a lot of other peoples faves also. "Doctor, Doctor" starts with a melancholy riff, a sad picked minor chord over which a second guitar moans in emotional turmoil. The bass and drums kick in with a hard beat that singer Phil Mogg sings what could be blues lyrics over. Pissed, maybe a little boozy and self pitying is the mood "Doctor. Doctor" puts me, but it is a great rocker with fine twin leads and perfect drumming.
"Rock Bottom" is enough to make most would be Guitar Hero clowns opt for clarinet lessons and the glee club. If you don't like the main riff UFO built this song around, give it a couple of minutes- the song goes into one of the coolest hard rock bridges anywhere and then several minute solo that builds from mellow rhythym picking and single note wails to one of the most fret mauling shows of rock n roll force ever recorded. Schenker makes an excellent and stylish transition from the "cool down" flick your lighters/sip your beer segment of "Rock Bottom" and does something amazing. You have got to hear it!
Michael Schenker won't play in the U. S anymore and it's disappointing. But the great sounds he made with UFO back in 73 are permanent and in my book HISTORICAL in their rocking greatness.
Classic
You have to own this CD and listen to some early Schenker guiter work. Doctor Doctor is a classic.
