Not quite thorough, but a great listen. This album (as do most live albums) really tries hard to capture that energy and sound. The V-Roys were a great live band, no question. I believe that the result is a good one, and it has the added bonus of old favorites.
I will have to say that the inclusion of "Can't Shake Knoxville" would've completed this offering. Anyone who ever went to a Knoxvegas show will know what I'm talking about.
Scott Miller's new stuff is great, but his band just can't keep up with the whole Mic Harrison/Paxton Sellers bit. It was kind of depressing to hear them play the V-Roys stuff on Market Square.
Still gets a 5, the V-Roys were the greatest alt-country band ever.
Crank it up in your car
Great stuff, rocks out. I confess I had never heard of the V-Roys, but heard this album playing in a little record shop and had to have it. They cop licks from Los Lobos, REM, Steve Earle, etc. Now it plays continuously in my car.
A Rockin' Farewell
Of course, most bands are lucky to have even one. Like their alternative country forebearers Uncle Tupelo, The V-Roys were split apart from having two strong creative forces within the band. The band's brief career comes to a close with the excellent live album, "Are You Through Yet?" in which all of the tracks are taken from one show. The sound is much more raw than on the band's studio albums, which makes the new verions of such first rate tracks as "Sorry Sue," "Over the Mountain," and "Virginia Way" worth hearing. There are also several excellent cover tunes, including a Neil Young rarity in "Motion Pictures," and a verision of the little remebered British band The Las ace pop hit "There She Goes. " In summary, it is exactly the type of high quality record you would expect from this criminally overlooked band. The surprise is that the album rocks a lot more than you might expect. The only drawback is that the show is not presented in its entirity, and seems chopped up in spots. Like with the original version of The Who's "Live at Leeds," it leaves you wondering how good the stuff is that they left out.
gone but not 4gotten
Their originals ran from high energy pop & rock to country, and folk, and they covered songs from The Replacements to Loudon Wainright. Seeing The V-Roys live was a life-changing experience, and also a hangover-inducing one. This CD only hints at the power and subtlety of a V-Roys show; there is no way to record all of their essence, but this is as good as a live record gets.
Get it & play it LOUD - it could change your life.
