Vandals rock! Not all that punky, obviously, but still rather punky. Very funny Vandals album. Also, catchy tunes, very funny, and rockin'. One of my favorite Vandals albums!.
Really Bad
The only saving grace is Stan Freese's "Play That Country Tuba, Cowboy. Good title for the album because it is really bad. " How many people can triple tongue a tuba? I never even listened to the whole album because it just did not suit my taste and I like country music. Oh well.
It's a really bad vandals album.
It's bad. They even warn you in the title. It's terrible! It's hilarious, but virtually unlistenable.
I have read reviews saying they were "experimenting" and "going a different direction". No they weren't! They remade Slippery When Ill into a horrible country album. Its a joke! Just like the Shingo Japanese Album. They arent experimenting with Japanese rock-they were remaking their stuff into some bizarre Japanese stuff! It's hilarious!
Buy it for fun, you will only listen to it once, and probably not all the way through.
heading in a different direction
They had lost Stev-o (vocals Peace Through Vandalism) and Dave Quackenbush came in on vocals, not to mention that most early L. While I don't think this album was made as a "joke" (they were actually serious here albeit with some humor added), it was heading in a different direction from the band's earlier incarnations. A punk bands had broken up and no one wanted to listen to punk anymore.
I used to listen to it (Slippery When Ill) and it was actually pretty good stuff. Peace Through Vandalism will always be a classic, long live Stev-o! I saw them live in the early 80's with Stev-o before they kicked him out, then they went downhill.
The early stuff is the best because it shows them before they became greedy and turned to mall punk type crap.

The Best Album The Vandals Ever Recorded
The reissue here is still drop-dead hilarious, but the addition of "Play That Country Tuba, Cowboy" it is a veritable "milk through the nose" laugh riot. This "joke" is one of the best albums of the 80's. Just like with post-punk pranksters like El Vez and The Dead Milkmen, neo-baby-punx of the 21st century are most likely too serious about a genre that died 20 years ago to see the genius here. Maybe one day, they will lighten-up enough to realize that their "punk" is just mainstream fluff, and outrageous, out-of-bounds albums like this one will be the ones to endure the test of time.
