Customer Reviews
could have been great
Good To See You was very relaxing until it sounded as if somebody was talking on their cell phone outside my window. I love the work of Vangelis and would have loved The City were it not for the irritating dialogue that absolutely ruined the mood of three songs. And Nerve Center was very grating on the nerves. I really enjoyed Side Streets as well as the finale, Procession. I'm not sure if Vangelis was trying to be innovating or just cute but it doesn't work. If you can get The City for half-price then get it because you will probably be listening to only half the songs.

A pleasant piece of work
Eight compositions are presented; these eight pieces evoke what it is like to be in a city. Vangelis' The City was released in 1990. This material is in a New Age musical direction. The songwriting, musicianship, and sound quality are gratifying. Of the eight tracks, my favorite one is the elegant, serene "Dawn," with its soothing wafts of sound. The CD booklet includes various color photos of Vangelis. The disc is just over 43 minutes. The City is recommendable.

A musical journey from dawn to dusk
Beginning with Dawn and then Roman Polanski trying to buy a paper too early in the day to a motorcycle ride through the city to a relaxed onesided phone conversation Vangelis takes everyday moments and encloses them with gorgous music that ranges from soothing to exhilerating. A beautiful work of musical art by Vangelis that proves that not all new age music has to be sleepinducing strolls through a forest. Evoking the variety of life in the city each song has a different mood be it peaceful or grand(the epic Procession). With an interesting use of Asian flavor a very few spoken words and sound effects The City is a toatally orginal New Age creation from one of the finest composers of our time.
